I have burned myself a bunch of these type of CDs over the years, that
were sort-of an amalgam of songs from all 3 GH albums, Rocks, Stone Cold
Classics, Classic Queen, Q is for Queen: The A-Z of Queen Volume 1, and
others. Every one I've burned has ended up with a slightly different
tracklisting, but there are some stalwarts that just *have* to be there.
Given that the fans are voting on this thing, I think the tracklisting is
going to be pretty much like every other Queen hits CD ever made. You can
almost gurantee that Bohemian Rhapsody is going to be on there, you can
almost guarantee that Another One Bites the Dust is going be there. I'm
kinda hoping that maybe there'll be some different mixes on the CD,
myself. Like, the video versions of Invisible Man and Headlong, and maybe
a new mix of Who Wants To Live Forever that has the first verse sung by
Freddie, like it appears in the first Highlander movie, but is shortened,
like the video version. I'd like to see a re-edit or re-mix of Hammer to
Fall that inlcudes the solo from the 12" Headbanger Mix, but without the
drum and guitar intro. Somethign like that would inspire long-time fans
to buy it, despite having each of those songs on no fewer than 5
different CDs already.

I mean, I laready have GH (Parlophone), GHII, and GHIII, Greatest Hits
(Hollywood), as well as The Gold Collection, The Platinum Collection,
Classic Queen, Stone Cold Classics, Rocks, and Q is for Queen, as well as
all of the original albums. DO I really need another hits collection? No.
Will I buy it anyway. Probably.

The thing that gets me is, they are already advertising this CD to have
20 songs on it, and as a single disc compilation. They couldn't pull that
off on GHII or Classic Queen without making some edits even to some
already edited single versions of the songs, and worse still those CDs
were comprised of only 17 songs. Either they already know what the
tracklisting is, or they are really overestimating what they can get on a
CD.

The only benefit I can think of is that the new tracks *may* be cleaned up
and remastered better with later technology. But on the other hand they
might get stuffed up.

Maybe, but my fear is that with fans being fans, the tracklisting is
probably going to be pretty much the same as "Greatest Hits, with maybe
only a couple of extra tracks. If that's the case, then it will be not much
improved over The We Will Rock You edition of Greatest Hits from a few
years ago.

Though it may anger some Fans, there are some songs on each of the GH
albums that I can do without. I don't really see the need for "Good Old
Fahioned Lover Boy", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Killer Queen", "Save Me", "Play
the Game", or "Seven Seas Of Rhye" on a single disc career retrospective.
Likewise, I don't think that "It's a Hard Life", "Breakthru", "The
Miracle", or "Friends Will Be Friends" make the grade on a career
encompassing CD, either. Ironically, there are some songs that have often
been overlooked, like "Tie Your Mother Down" (its on Classic Queen and GH:
The WWRY edition, but both seem like forced inclusions, rather than
admitted omissions), which I would like to see included, but I don't think
they will make the cut, either.

Maybe they should just release already created packages (GH etc) and
include a new cover. Maybe that's what they intend. Aprt from
completeist who would buy such a package? If it's new fans from their
last tour they won't have to produce very many.

I agree - a "Best Of" rather than a "Greatest Hits" would introduce many
casual fans to the lesser-known highlights. Tie Your Mother Down and
Spread Your Wings instantly spring to mind, but to be honest I'd
struggle to keep it down to a triple album. ;-)

While not a bad list (and honestly, everyone's would be different, and
still of just about equal quality), I'm not sure your list would be a
fitting GH comp, as I don't think a lot of those songs were ever released
as singles.

It'd make a pretty good "Best Of" disc, though.

I don't understand why Hollywood Records feels the need to release
Greatest HIts album after Greatest Hits album. Why not release
something from the "vault"? Why not release another DVD concert? It's
equally annoying that they have the same, tired track listing for
these compilations.

Meh, the comps are cheap to make, and generally sell well enough to recoup
expenses. They are trying something different with the tracklisting by
letting the fans decide, at least.

Releasing something from the "Vault" would require it to have work done on
it before Queen Productions would let it out the door as a representation
of themselves. So you hire someone to find it all, catalog it all,
digitally restore and remaster it all, then decide on packaging and track
selection, if its a DVD, Brian has to supervise a 5.1 remaster of the
sound...

A comp: pick 20 tracks fans. OK, got it, here you go.

It is pretty meaningless for Queen fans, since we do not buy those
greatest hits albums

So, the tracklisting does not really interest anyone, and they have
released too many GH albums already

I bet this one is not going to sell much, maybe even less than GH3 and Rocks

This is true. I haven't bought a Queen album since Made In Heaven, and
don't plan to buy another one until there's something from the
"vaults".

I wouldn't before these GH albums even if the tracklistings were
different. I have all the albums, and if I want, I can make a
"Greatest Hits of songs written by Roger" if I wanted to. Perhaps they
don't have a lot of releasable material in the "vaults", but I have a
feeling they do. At least enough to put together a nice box set.

I have no idea what the sale number are for any of these GH albums,
but I'm guessing they sell enough to warrant Hollywood to keep
releasing them.

Gold Collection" that had the original Greatest Hits I & II in it.
Apparently, I wasn't the only one that felt that way. Year later, I
actually admire Classic Queen for what it was: A trick to get people to
buy it instead of the Wayne's World Soundtrack, and instead introduce a
new geneeration to Queens later material. It was a strange bunch of
songs, with a couple from '74 and '76, and a bunch of others from 1982
and up.

That album made me buy A Night at the Opera, as well as Innuendo, so
it's always an album I hold in high regard. I agree they butchered a
lot those songs, but it got me started down the Queen path, so I can't
knock it too badly.

Oh, sure, there is, but Queen's back catalog doesn't get re-ordered and
re-stocked very often or very deeply, and a new comp is likely to get
more attention and more prominent shelf placement and in-store promotion
than an older one, and therefore will get sales that the older one would
not.

That's true, but do you think Queen still has selling power in the US?
I know they still do elsewhere, but I'm curious if a Greatest Hits
sells well here. Having said that, I guess it would sell better than a
box set of demos and rarities, at least in the US.

Quote:
Wouldn't we all, but Queen Productions seems content doing what they do.
There's a rumor of an old Hammersmith concert making its way to DVD soon, I think.

I've heard about that, and that would be great if true. They were
putting out vintage material for a while up until a few years ago and
haven't done so since. I wonder why they suddenly stopped? It seemed
like they were ready to open the flood gates, so to speak, with old
concerts and what not, but that died fairly quickly. I assumed the
sales were there, but I guess not.
