Eric Clapton
Ross

My first time seeing Clapton after waiting years. I was maybe a little
disappointed, he played very little from Layla (didn't play the title tune
even) or the Cream days. He was okay, he seemed kinda scattered and
self-conscious; he was much better the next time I saw him, a year or so
later.

I have no recollection of Ross, except that it was a band and not a guy
named Ross. Can't find anything about them online.

Not a very memorable night in general.

Apparently they didn't make much of an impression on Christgau either.
Here's his one-sentence non-review from 1974, which mentions the Clapton
tour you saw:

LAYLA is really the only thing of Clapton's that I've ever loved...and then

came to find
out that the things I loved most about it were due to Duane Allman.
Never got the Clapton thing...that guy bores me most of the time (although
hearing a few
Cream songs would have been cool if he'd done that, which it sounds as
though he didn't).

Thanks Evan. I'd probably agree with his C- grade (although I certainly
never heard their album). They weren't an "F" in concert; if they were, I'd
remember them.
But, they can always say they toured with Eric Clapton.

He did do one Cream song, "Badge".
Clapton was already a legend back then --- early Yardbirds; founding member
of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers; Cream; Blind Faith; The Beatles' White
Album; Live Peace in Toronto with The Plastic Ono Band; The Concert For
Bangla Desh; his suberb first solo album; and of course "Layla" .... We had
to go see him!

Although I'm a huge Duane Allman fan, I believe he stole lots of Clapton's
thunder on the Layla album; Allman got more credit than he deserved. While
Duane did have great moments on Layla, actually Clapton's great moments on
said album are about 3 times more than what Duane did. Great great singing
on that record by Clapton as well.

Yes--that's pretty good! And it's a sign of Christgau's arrogance that
he pans them without saying a word about them. He doesn't do that sort
of thing anymore.

I saw Clapton at MSG in the early 90s with Jimmie Vaughan opening. He
was touring in support of "From the Cradle," mostly doing blues covers.
I liked it. It's probably one of the last non-Bruce arena shows I've seen.

That is true about the singing. Every time I talk about Clapton to

someone...and mention that he
sounds as emotive as a robot when he sings...they're quick to use the LAYLA
album as an example
of how wrong I am. Can't say I can argue with this example....

Damn. You know, that album's version of "Little Wing" is even better than
Hendrix's version....
