For Military and Veterans using AT&T Newsgroups
As you know, on or around June 31, 2009, AT&T will no longer provide Usenet access. However, an extensive list of interactive, No-Spam forums are available for veterans and military newsgroup users: |

Well, yer actual Ammurican Grunts n' all aren't the only ones affected
by that!
The poor dears that pay the taxes to support the American PeaceMakers
(I know, that's an oxymoron) are also being shut out of free Usenet.
First, you nationlise General Motors.. now you demand y'all pay for
Usenet access.
Ah, socialism is SOOO bad. |

Here is a link to some free newsgroups. http://www.disenter.com/ I am
Quote: able to subscribe with some of
these, but not all of them. When I successfully download messages,
however,
I have not been able to reply or post messages using these.
One that worked for me was identified only as 202.177.16.121.
Another one: freenews.netfront.net
If anyone finds out how to post messages with these, using windows mail
please post the instructions

Apaprently, the shutdown date is actually around mid-July.
This is actually pretty common; lots of ISPs are walking away from Usenet,
for a variety of reasons.
Yes, there are plenty of free UseNet servers, which you can quickly find by
googling "free usenet servers".
However, performance is spotty, available groups are limited, and you may
well not be able to post. Expect to get what you pay for, or less than
what you paid for, from free servers.
3rd party Usenet services can be a much better choice, and decent service
can run you around $5/month (of course you can pay more...). Again, Google
can show you a number of providers, for example Supernews and Giganews.

I am the OP and I had an online chat with an AT&T supervisor (Ashley) last night and she informed me that it was moved up to the 30th of June. I live in the Houston area, I saw this in one of the other NG's and contacted them because my "contract" has NG's included in the price, since they are cutting back services I asked about a price reduction. I was told to contact Tier 2 support at 1-877-733-3755. But she did confirm the 30th of June date, maybe that date is good for this area but she didn't express that.

Well, Giganews at $US2.95/month provides me with Superior Service,
including all the binaries and posting I could wish for up to 2GB

The funny thing is: Giganews' rates have been imploding for months.
I now pay a fraction for 2GB than I used to...

Yeah well right now we are on a fixed income and news was a part of the contract with SBC/AT&T and was being charged for, these news Groups rent space from AT&T and all the other hardliners providers Bellsouth, Commiecast etc. The price that I pay for my upgraded DSL line won't drop a dime. When that Yankee wuss Como filed suit against ISP's for carrying NG's that's what started this, now he's into guess what internet newsgroups. |
