So this is why Beethoven continued using pianos well into his
deafness. It wouldn't help much to hear, say, a symphony orchestra
(the accounts of him unable to hear applause and beating time several
measures off), but a piano, being in close proximity, would be
reasonable to "hear". Indeed, the brains in deaf people do become
hypersensitive to tactile senses after a period of time in which
hearing is lost. I know there were some other deaf composers around
the time of Beethoven, so maybe there is some plausibility to this
hypothesis (hearing through tactile instead of acoustically).
