Only number 24 in the UK - -first time I can remember the first single not
going straight into the top 10 for a long time.

I don't think they worry about chart position, they make music for their
fans, who always buy their albums/singles etc.

I really don't understand why a lot of people are furious against DM
cause they dont like their new stuff. I've been a fan from the
beginning and as far as i'm concerned i don't know any band that is
still doing interresting stuff after almost 30 years... Come on !!!
There's always at least a couple of good songs on every album since
Violator... To me Violator is in the same category as The Joshua
Tree : A COMPLETE album FULL of great songs. U2 has the same kind of
problem, their fans are looking for Joshua Tree #2 and look what U2
produced over the last 15 years !!!

I can understand that every fan is looking for an album that good, but
keep in mind that they are human and nobody's forcing anyone to buy or
listen to their NEW sound... At least these guys are trying to develop
a new kind of sound album after album... There will never be a better
personal jesus or enjoy the silence or anything else... Past is in the
past and i do admire Depeche Mode for what they are trying to do in
the present. If you are deceived by their new CD go back to the old
songs that you like so much and stop your condemnation Sad

Are you saying you didn't like their stuff previous to Violator, or was
Violator your first exposure to them? Personally, I like their
pre-Violator stuff the best, but there are still songs I like on every
album from Violator on, including Sounds of the Universe (Peace and
Perfect are my current favorites).

Likewise. My favourite album would be Construction Time Again, and Black
Celebration. Violator was obviously what made them in the States, but that
would be a parochial outlook!

I would argue that it was actually Music for the Masses that made them
in the states, and Violator just gave them a shove (albeit a bloody
massive one!) that is still part of their momentum today.

It's funny, but I don't regard the early albums with anything like the
misty-eyed nostalgia that I once did. That's not to say I don't enjoy
them any more - I do - but I feel I see them more objectively than I
used to.

While I think I'd like a few more uptempo tracks, overall SOTU is
pretty great to my ears. Peace is extraordinary, and Wrong is the best
lyric Martin's ever written, IMO.
