Amazing what a difference a decade makes. Ten years ago, no one on
this newsgroup would have thought of asking the question, much less
expecting an answer.

That was before Meade, Spottswood & Meade's "Country Music Sources"
and Russell's "Country Music Records" had been published, so
discographical information was only available to the very few who had
complete collections of such publications as "Disc Collector" and "Old
Time Music" magazine. Even then, the information was sparse and
scattered. There have also been many nice historical articles
published in "Old Time Herald" about early OTM greats. And, of course,
the internet explosion means that it's pretty easy to explore arcania
without communicating with anyone else. So the questions that came up
were numerous, but not that hard to answer nowadays.

As to other differences: there were a lot more postings, although
probably fewer people reading the posts. Every day would reliably
bring about a half-dozen posts, while now the OT newsgroup can go for
days without anyone saying anything. Many of the people who once
posted here regularly are now chatting on Facebook. The quality of
the posts has always been high -- there have been very few of the
flaming contests that give some Usenet groups a bad name. I'm not sure
why an interest in OT music seems to suppress aggressive behavior, but
it's one of the auxiliary pleasures of communicating on this venue.
Everyone have a great day -- that's an order.
