The "new" album? Oh dear. How to rehash the same old stuff. Same chords,
same arpeggios, same electronic gongs, same chicken-like back of the studio
clucking. Same same same.
Is this the best she can do? It's just all the old tracks put in a blender
and regurgitated. She quite obviously is no longer capable of original
ideas. And a Christmas music album? What an object lesson in
self-limitation.
Bloody crap. It might sell a thousand copies. |

I'm afraid I share your opinion, except that it will probably sell millions.... Let's be honest: The last two were already pointing in this direction and both did phenominally. Mediocracy sells....

Dennis

surprised there's no one to give a positive opinion on the new album.
I find it much more fresh than Amarantine, the song writing is better
, etc...
after all, Enya is Enya, sure I'd like a simple piano / voice album ,
and live concerts of Enya....
but why should she change a good formula?

Hi,
Quote: surprised there's no one to give a positive opinion on the new album.
It's recieving quite some good reviews at Amazon.com
I'm surprised by every single one of them.

I wouldn't, that would be even worse.
I guess I miss the synthesizers, the wider selection of instruments.
Listen to The Celts where she was really combining so many different
sounds. Not just the pizzicatos, electric piano, standard rhythm computer
and some weakly sampled strings. Things were actually happening in her
music.
Quote: and live concerts of Enya....
Now that would be nice. :-)

Because formulas are boring, and pointless. Once something has come
down to be "formula", you know you've taken it one step too far. Does
the word "formulaic" ring any bells?
I think a better question would be: Why stick to a formula?
All the answers I can come up with are negative. Because it
sells well? Because it's safe? Because it takes less effort?
Pointless. Don't make an album we already have.
Best regards,
Dennis |

Indeed. The Celts is one of my all-time favourite Enya tracks, although I
think TMOT was her best album, and was the first of her albums I bought.

It would, but I doubt it will happen any time soon...

I think of 'And Winter Came' as more of a seasonal album. It's got
winter/Christmas songs in it and it's come out mere weeks before
Christmas, so no doubt it's to try and boost sales.
I do hope she will go back to doing more of the stuff she did in TMOT.

Hi William,
Nice to see you again. I remember we chatted a lot here in the late
nineties...

Right, but there was this recent BBC interview with Enya
where she was quite serious about this topic once again. I
admit, she's been serious about it around the release of,
I guess the last 3 or 4 albums, but still, I like that those
thoughts are kept alive, to some extend.

Yeah, but weren't they all sort of seasonal albums in a way?
She always has this white, snowey, belley, dreamy quality.. I
played The Celts probably just about every Chrismas. :-)

That would be nice for sure. I should try that one again. I realize
it was very good, but I do have a tendency to stick with the first
three a bit too much.
Best regards,
Dennis |

Yes, I've not had a lot to say recently. Been mostly lurking, but I check
the newsgroups almost every day.
I still have the video and the CD you made up for me. They're still prized
possessions...;-)

Oh right. I've not seen or heard what she's said about this recently. If
the live concert went ahead, it would have to have like lots of
orchestration etc as she hasn't got the most powerful voice in the world.
I know that this would be very time consuming to plan and set up to make
it sound just right. I've seen her video of her playing 'Book Of Days' on
the piano on TOTP with the harpists and it seemed to take a bit of setting
up just for that 1 song.

Yes, I think you're right there. I never actually noticed that before I
bought 'And Winter Came' but after listening to it, and going back through
some of her older stuff, I notice it more now.
I remember turning on the radio one Monday morning and the first song I
heard that day was 'Trains And Winter Rains' and I knew who was singing it
straight away. I had actually preordered the album from Amazon the
previous week, and it arrived later that week...:-)

Hearing 'Orinoco Flow' on the radio years ago for the first time made me
sit up and listen, as I had never heard of Enya before then. It just so
happend I saw TMOT on a shop shelf so I bought it straight away and never
looked back. 'Memory Of Trees' and 'Pax Deorum' are 2 of my faves.

Perhaps it will be very good if a duet with Ozzy Osborne can be
materialized. |
