Ok folks - need to liven things up here. The group is dying on its
feet. Let's se if we can get a little movement happening.

I have a quesry for any readers. Who is your favourite mandolinist and
why? For example, I would have to say that overall I don't like Chris
Thile although I respect his skills. It seems to me that mandolinists
(excluding Thile) are generally consigned to the back burner. Maybe we
aren't charismatic enough?

I don't thank I have a favorite but I like Ricky Skaggs, Dan Tyminski
and pretty much which ever mandolinist IIIrd Tyme Out happens to be
using at any given time.

Heck, even Vince Gill can grab a Mando and impress me.

I agree with you on Chris Thile.

Ry Cooder plays pretty well, and is pretty widely recognized.

Ry Cooder has a way of putting a different spin on a song that I
sometimes like. I heard him do the old country song "He'll Have To Go"
with a mariachi band backing him up. I've been trying to do that
spanish rythem on my acoustic guitar. I can do it cleaner with a pick
but it seems like it needs to be done with just the fingers when I do
it with just my guitar and no other backup.

in truth, it's the mandolin itself that has me fascinated, regardless
of who's playing it. i don't know that many musicians to choose a
favorite but at the moment, i'm listening to ruth roshan:

.... and trying to copy a lick she does at 3:25.
