Interesting and informative interview, especially about Nez's guitar
preferences these days. I've known he's played a Fender for a long
time but that brand of guitar, to me -- and good as it is, just isn't
him. Course, these days, he's more likely to be playing keyboards,
what with his New age/electronica work. |

Quote: I always think of him with that red Gretsch Monkees guitar. A friend of
mine had one of those, and he sold it without consulting me. Curses!
I also think of Nez with the Gretsch White Falcon 12-string, but was
the red guitar specifically referred to as a Monkees guitar? I know
Gretsch had a Monkees brand guitar but didn't think it was used in the
show by Nez or by Peter. Gretsch made a three-quarters sized custom
bass for Davy, which he played at concerts in the 60s, but the bass
never made an appearance in the series. When Davy faked the bass on
the video for "Pleasant Vallye Sunday," he was using Peter's bass,
which was a Fender, I believe. |

Mike used the red Gretsch in some 2nd season eps. The only tape I have
of Davy with the Gretsch bass is from the Glen Campbell Show. My friend
bought the guitar but had to order the Monkee logos for it separately. I
got to play it a few times, it was a good guitar. We may have even used
it on a couple recordings, I honestly don't remember, because he had so
many guitars in the house. Every week I could try a different guitar! My
favorite was the Vox Teardrop 12 string. The shape made it awkward to
play sitting down, but the sound was very nice. I've always loved the
sound of electric 12 string. |

Weird that one would had to have ordered the Monkees logo separately.
The guitar in a way reminded me of the Chet Atkins model, although it
looked smaller. I believe the guitar was used in the episode "Some
Like It Lukewarm," which wasn't one of my favorite episodes as far as
the comedy was concerned, although it was good to have "The Door Into
Summer" featured in another episode.
Regarding Davy's bass being used on the Glen Campbell show, that was
also one of the last original times Micky played the drums and the
only time Micky, Davy and Mike played as a group in a conventional
band setting (guitar, bass, drums). Made me wonder if they planned
initially on playing those instruments as a trio but decided to not
even bother with trying to be a band?
I'm pretty sure I've seen the Vox 12-string Teardrop guitar. I think
that in the mid-60s, Vox was a more popular brand than either Gibson,
Gretsch or even Rickenbacker. I remember seeing a lot of bands playing
on Vox guitars and almost every band playing their guitars through a
Vox amplifier. Must've been a pretty good brand although my choice
would've been any of the Gibsons or Rickenbackers. I liked the Gretsch
line as well. |

The sound would've been very sparse with just Micky, Davy and Mike
playing. It was very sparse with the four of them. I doubt that Davy was
very good on the bass, either. I know he played a little (literally!)
bass, drums and keys in their shows, but it was better to bring in a
backup band in 69 and let Davy and Micky concentrate on singing. |

Most bands from the 60s didn't sound as good as their recordings.
Having the ability to overdub additional instruments was a double
edged sword: it gave the songs a fuller sound but if you were in a
four or five piece band and you overdubbed (played) a lot of
instruments which wasn't your main instrument, if you played that song
live, the sound on that live version would be very sparse indeed. I
don't know how good Davy was on the bass. Likewise, I doubt he was
very good on the instrument. He might have been a better drummer than
bassist. I know he said in an interview during the 80s reunion that
he, rather than Micky, should've been the drummer since he liked
playing the drums. Keyboards, I didn't even know he played (with the
Monkees) until he was credited on the live version of "Circle Sky." In
the movie, I think you just get a quick glimpse of him playing the
electric organ. It was better to bring in a backup band in '69 but I
still would've had Davy and Micky playing something other than maracas
and tambourine, maybe both of them playing on guitars along with Mike.
You know, anything just to show off their musical skills as well as
their vocal skills. |

It would've been a good compromise if Micky drummed on the songs Mike
and Davy sang, them came up front for the songs he sang. That was sort
of what he did in 97, although he did sing some songs from behind the
drumkit. Davy played guitar on roughly half the songs that year. I'm
sure there were a few people in the audience surprised to see that these
guys could really play! |

There was a video from the Wembley '97 concert on youtube in which
there was a reference, by Micky, I think, of Davy having played the
bass on the previous song. Unfortunately, I can't remember which video
for which song where that reference was made. Nez also played electric
organ or synth on "For Pete's Sake" and "Daddy's Song" from that same
concert, so the Monkees appeared to be giving their best to impress.
Most non-Monkee fans probably had no clue the guys are like many of
their peers, in that they are multi-instrumentalists, rather than a
singular instrumentalist. |
