No thanks, for the most part. I think The Joshua Tree is a great
album, and I very much like some of their other stuff, but I rarely
listen to their music and have no interest in their new stuff.

I'm listening to WOAD now, will give it another good listen later
tonight and post my more put-together thoughts on it then.

Nah, U2 are still a very big band with a lot of younger fans. I'm
guessing their new album will sell a lot more than WOAD. Their last
one in 2004 went triple platinum in the US.

I gotta say, I don't get the conjecture that these songs won't work in
concert simply because they're very "produced" on the album. I'm
looking forward to hearing what Bruce does with most of these tunes in
concert, especially the ones I don't care for on the record.

its GONNA BE NO GOOD what he does with em!! for details YOU CAIN READ
the BRUCE BOARD the day after the show APRIL 2.
its gonna be kvetchin and grumpy type of post. a BARNEY FIFE type of
vibe, over there.

as far as U2 2004 that was then today is now. that awful U2 music MAY
outsell BRUCE by puttin the songs on just about every commercial there
is, but they MAY NOT!! and if they do it wont be by MUCH! and BRUCE
cain rock the JOINT without the need of HUGE COMPUTERS ONSTAGE or all
sorta MECHANICAL DEVICES.

Springsteen has rarely been much for interesting melodies, but I find
Magic particularly egregious simply because they're so similar on so
many songs. Listening to that album front to back for me is like
constantly falling down the same staircase. Nearly every chorus is
just a series of descending lines. That makes wonderful sense for
"You'll Be Coming Down," but hearing the same thing over and over
again in "Your Own Worst Enemy," "Girls In Their Summer Clothes,"
"I'll Work For Your Love"... It took me months to realize that "Long
Walk Home" was a good song, because by the time I would get to it when
listening to the album straight through, I'd be bored to tears with
these incessant descending lines.

No no no. I said I think his *singing* is just fine on those songs.
They're far from my favorites on the album.

But I'll do my full run-down of the album later tonight, after I have
some dinner and listen to it again.

another.

I agree. I've been trying to decide if "Magic" is Bruce's most melodic
album of all. It's up there, IMO.

On the other hand, I sometimes wish "Magic" had a little more rhythm.
Outside of "Living in the Future," it's missing a little something
compared to my favorite Bruce rock music. But I still love it. And while
some of Bruce's new singing is jarring, "Girls in Their Summer Clothes"
is an instant classic for me. I like the album more as time passes.

I'm less crazy about the melodies on the new one. And I think that the
songs WOAD and "Queen" are serious low points, in different ways. But I
like the album as a whole, and I love some of it. And I love that Bruce
always tries to go big when he clearly doesn't have to.

Is it the melodies or do you really not just like this type of
production? Because I think WOAD is probably the most melodic album
Springsteen has done since 1975. I thought "Magic" was a return to
melodic songs and singing, but he goes far further on "WOAD" down that
road. I think WOAD is a masterpiece.
