The Kinks
Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks
Mason Profitt
Another bizarre Bill Graham bill, but an irresistable one. I remember that
when we sat down, we discovered that a close friend's older sister and her
boyfriend coincidentally were there in the seats right in front of us, which
was very ironic, since she had been the person who had introduced me to
Hicks' music a few years before, and had taken her brother and me to see
them at a little nightclub on San Pablo Ave in Berkeley called the New
Orleans House.
Mason Profitt I guess was a Chicago band; Zeke remembers them well. I don't
recall much about them, except that they were a pretty good rock band.
Dan Hicks and crew didn't disappoint, playing all the great songs and most
of the new ones from the "Last Train To Hicksville" album. We figured the
title indicated this would be their final tour as a group, and it turned out
to be just that. They weren't the quaint, funny little swing band we'd seen
years before; they now had a drummer, and a guitarist, but they were still
very good.
I'd always liked the Kinks, in fact their first album was my first album.
But I had little idea of how they were live. Of course, if you've ever seen
the Kinks, you know that they completely rocked in concert, and we were
absolutely blown away.
A fine night at the old skating rink! |

Two hangmen hanging from a tree
and that don't bother me.... at all.
Yup. Great band.
Very influential in Chitown and one of the bands I was listening to when I
flipped gresaer to hippie and went strolling into Lennies in my fancy pants.
Fancy Pants was what we called anybody in blue jeans, especially anybody in
BELL BOTTOM blue jeans (hold nose).
"Pssst! Hey Fancy Pants! Yer balls is showing!"
We were anachronistic, but funny.
Anyway, they were a Youngbloody, Poco-y sorta band. Two Hangmen was an
excellent song. About a year later LZ#3 came out with Gallows Pole -
another hangman song - so radio used to play them back to back.
Great review, as always, Mr. Burt!

My first and only (so far) Dylan concert.
I was a little disappointed in Bob's style of singing (this was only his
3rd
or 4th change of singing styles at this point, so I wasn't expecting
it),
he
did that thing where he would basically yell the last word of each line
or
verse; but other than that it was a fabulous show. And looking back at
Bob's
singing on this tour, it really wasn't that bad. The Band was possibly
at
their peak, they were flawless and perfect.
Unfortunately, the thing I remember most is this: my girlfriend and I
had
been keeping track of the tour from reading about it in Rolling Stone
(no
internet, newsgroups, or instant bootlegs), and I guess they had
reported
that he hadn't been doing any 2nd encores on the rest of the tour. So,
after
the first encore, the girlfriend insisted we go, to beat the traffic.
The
other 13,000 people would be clapping and yelling, waiting for a 2nd
encore
that wasn't gonna happen, while we'd be breezing out of the parking lot,
jumping on the Nimitz freeway, sans heavy traffic. It went against my
better
nature; I had never left a concert until the lights went up and
"Greensleeves" started up over the P.A. But this time, I begrudgingly
said
okay. It was late, and she had to be to work at 6 a.m. the next day (she
was
a waitress). We left the building on the opposite side of the parking
lot
that we were in, so we had to walk by the outside of the arena to get to
our
lot. And, as we're walking by, I hear the muffled strains of Bob doing
none
other than "Blowing In The Wind", barely audible through the concrete
and
glass. He had come back for that 2nd encore.
I gave her a bad time about that for years. And, now that I think of it,
I'm
gonna email her right now and do it again!
