11/6/74 Cow Palace, S.F.
George Harrison
Ravi Shankar
My first time seeing a Beatle.
Unfortunately, George had laryngitis that night, so all the songs were sort
of George meets Tom Waits. Very very disappointing, I really wish he had
postponed and come back when his voice was better. But he had a whole tour
scheduled ahead of him (this was near the beginning of it), and I imagine
the logistics of getting back to S.F. with that enormous entourage would be
difficult.
He had a great band though, Tom Scott And The L.A. Express, with the great
Robben Ford on guitar, the same band that had backed Joni Mitchell so nicely
on her tour a year earlier.
Ravi Shankar was great too, although predictably there was a lot of milling
around and talking during his set; Indian music wasn't ideal in an arena
setting. Still, they were outstanding and I'm glad I got to see such a
virtuoso/living legend in his peak years.
George made a valiant effort to put on a good show despite the gravelly
voice, and the crowd certainly wasn't gonna begrudge the man; he's a bloody
Beatle, sod off! But it was pretty disappointing.
One highlight though was him performing Lennon's "In My Life", I remember
that well. There must be a recording of him doing that song later in the
tour when his voice returned; I'd love to hear that. |

Although I didn't get the oppertunity to see that tour I do recall all
the press at the time writing about Harrison's fight with his vocal
delivery.
Thanks for sharing! |
