How many can you hear?

http://www.freemosquitoringtones.org/

Too many Rush concerts for me I'm afraid... I can hear the 12kHz, but
nothing higher. My ears are 50 years old. Ouch.

It really seemed I could *feel* some discomfort on the higher ones, but
I definitely couldn't *hear* them.

Rob (!Petard)'s kids came running in, freaking out, "What IS that
sound?". LOL

Got to 17.4 barely. Maybe in a silent room (this place has an A/C that sounds
like a freaking subway train) I could manage the 18, but that's it.

18 hear, here.

15, maybe the 16, but that's it. :(

I was surprised that I could hear the 18 one. Standing watches in noisy
engine rooms for 12 hours a day, every day, for about 10 months a year,
for 4 years straight have killed my hearing. My wife is constantly
complaining that I have things like the TV and music too loud when I can
barely hear it.

I had to get my headphones and crank it up to 11, but . . .

15KHz was at the threshold of my hearing. 16KHz was right out. I've got a
test disc around here somewhere which would likely give more accurate results,
but 15KHz sounds about right for 45.

17.4, 18 and 19k were absolutely brutal on my ears.
17.4 was the severely painful.
I maxed out at 19k, which is surprising, considering the amount of
time I've spent in front of ridiculously loud amplifiers, on stage,
but then again, maybe not.
I've always believed that some people are more prone to hearing loss
and tinnitus, than others, and being around loud music or machinery
may not have as much to do with it, as science would lead you to
believe.
I believe it can be both hereditary and dependant on the noise levels
you were exposed to, when you were very young.

14k here; maybe 15 if it wasn't through the speakers in my laptop,
though that frequency was nearly indistinguishable from my tinnitus.

I've played for many years in rock bands standing next to drummers with
heavy hands, so it's not unexpected that I'm deaf as a doorknob.

The expression on my dog's face when I played them was, however, priceless.

With headphones on cranked up, I can hear 19 better than 18. I am not sure
if I can hear 20 and 21, but it is not quiet enough. I thought maybe there
was no sound for 21, but when I unplugged the earphones, the dog sure heard
it. And I had LASIK a month ago, so now do I now only have super hearing, I
have super vision, too.

16kHz here. Just.

Would it really make such a difference in headphones at high frequency? I
have the impression that it cuts right through the rest of the ambient
noise...

Indeed, as your speakers may be tailing off at the high end
frequencies.

Headphones, definitely. Many PCs have crap speakers with a sharp rolloff in
the higher ranges.

Yes, but proceed with caution and keep the volume down.
I think my ears are still hurting.
