Super High Material CD - have a look
herehttp://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/archive/index.php/t-127465.html
SHM CDs are the latest 'con' - another so-called superior remastering of
stuff that has already been remastered twice sometimes three times.
Emperor's new clothes etc. Some will love them some will see through it
all, myself included.
I've purchased the aforementioned Yes discs as the packaging is very
nice indeed, complete mini-replicas of the original vinyl albums. I
haven't bothered with some of the earlier remasters so I thought I'd try
a handful. I don't find them much if at all different sonically to my
neighbour's Rhino releases. In some cases they sound harsher, in others
maybe a slight improvement but I haven't had a chance to do a full
comparison.
I have others, the worst by far being Rainbow's Difficult To Cure. The
sound on that is so narrow, listening on headphones I was struck
immediately by how un-stereo sounding the disc was but I haven't
compared it to my old vinyl so that could be just as bad but I don't
remember it being that 'narrow' tbh.
The Gentle Giant discs, too, aren't that special but they're a band I
have absolutely nothing left to compare the discs to.
Going back to the 'mono' on the labels of the Yes discs, it must be a
mistake but whoever would have thought of adding that to the labels and
why?
