Tom
A couple "what if" questions for Wyrd.
I don't know, if Priest had pulled a Painkiller out of their hats and
add that to the publicity and newness of Halford's return they might
of got (for today) some high numbers. I don't believe even a cd equal
in quality to Painkiller would bring them much more sales today than
they already enjoy.
Perhaps maybe it might have moved a bit more the first week, but I
assume it's sales would probably about equal what AoR did. (providing
that the album is a PK near equal released in place of AoR)
As for if they did it in place of Nostra? I think the same. Bad
economy, bad unemployment, less and less people bothering to buy CD's
and there you go. We already know quality does not = bigger sales in
music.
Did Turbo outsell Painkiller?
yes, it was all down hill as far as sales go after Turbo. Turbo,
despite being a terrible record was hugely popular in the US. |

Quote: This is the amount of listeners they have...and is worldwide. Stats
presumably go back to when Lastfm was created a few years back...their songs
have been listened to 13 million times. Helloween are still a very big band
in Europe, they chart in most countries and play fairly big halls.
I just know they never really made in the US. The keeper albums did
some numbers, and they did tour over here, (I got to see them with
Exodus and Anthrax) I don't think they made the US a priority after
that.
Quote: I don't know what else they can do to let people know a band is
working on and recording a new album. Seems like MD is on BM every
day, and generally, if you're a fan of a band, and still interested,
you know these sort of things.
I think a band like Metallica just have a lot of casual fans, sort of people
that only buy a handful of new albums a year and only by bands they
recognise or get shoved down their throats.
Yeah, sort of like Kiss, and AC/DC.
Tom
Not trying to put down Kiss or AC/DC. Just examples. |

I bought 7 cds today and have 6 on order that should show up this week. I
guess I'm going againt the grain. I also bought the Brutal Legend game
(which is rather fun). Bad economy or not, I need my Metal!
I haven't bought a number like that in one day. I have bought 7 or 8
the past month with 3 on order.

You make some good points other wise in the post.
Someone put forth a bit of effort to this website.

in the 20`s here...whereas the previous couple were around 60 odd...so
things have clearly got a lot better.
Megadeth has Platinum records in the US. Ones that have sold over
1,000,000. I believe their best selling album has sold over 2 million
(US) I did see years ago that they had sold in the range of 7,000,000
plus on Soundscan numbers.
You can't sell millions without having a fanbase, even if you don't
have "hits"

Did Turbo outsell Painkiller?
Different times, I suspect. I know Turbo has a platinum award, and
PK had a Gold. What I don't know is since then what are the sales for
each album? Turbo was released during the big "pop metal" or "hair
metal" times, and was a fit to the times. By the time PK was released,
the scene had changed.
Surely most JP fans who admit being fans today like PK way more than
Turbo. |

Turbo fit the scene at the time. 1986, and mtv was big into playing
that sort of pop-metal, hair metal stuff. Although at this time things
were rapidly shifting towards thrash metal.

As if RR would spend 10 million on ads. I doubt they outlay that
much for their whole company in ads.I don't know how much more in
sales he would get if they did outlay a lot more cash. Probably as you
said, What's the fan base for a band many old time fans probably
forgot about 15-20 years ago?
Megadeth have 591,000 listeners on lastfm. Comapred to some of their 80`s
contemporaries...Slayer 551,000, Anthrax 349,000, Metallica 1.46M, Maiden
936,000, Testament 227,000, Priest 550,000, Motley Crue 411,000, W.A.S.P.
228,000, Manowar 318,000, Helloween 328,000, Exodus 149,000...
For me, Megadeth have 103 plays and Metallica have 0 (this year). I guess
I'm not contributing much to their numbers. Since charts are always fun:
Slayer - 186
Anthrax - 45
Testament - 85
Maiden - 320
Priest - 518
Motley Crue - 0
WASP - 55
Manowar - 15
Helloween - 280
Exodus - 40 |

any are out of print, they're just cheaper used. |
