Are there any bands you feel that are overrated that most metalheads are
into? I can only think of one at the moment and that would be Pantera
and while I do like them I feel they are hugely overrated and assigned
too much importance. As for the other bands that are generally liked by
metalheads I feel they deserve it.

I can't see why commercial success has anything to do with how an
individual rates a band.  Going by the definition "to rate or appraise
too highly", personally I don't think a lot of the bands listed are
over-rated.  Is being popular a crime (I am ignoring TJ's views on
this).  Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Opeth are all popular, but all four
have produced music that is classic and should all be held in high
regard.

bands receive rave reviews for weaker albums purely because of their
name. I'm particularly reminded of St Anger, some later Slayer albums,
and of course some of Maiden's later albums, and as much as I'm an
opeth fanboi, albums like Ghost Reveries have received great critical
acclaim when they were perhaps slightly below what is expected of the
band.

Pantera & Motorhead ( I like some of their classics but the bulk of their
back catalogue *shrugs with indifference* ) spring to mind.

From my chosen genres ( there`s really no point in me listing loads of
grunge or stoner bands as I don`t like those genres in the first place ) I
can`t think of too many acclaimed thrash bands that I don`t like...I don`t
think Forbidden are as good as some do but generally I love all the classic
thrash stuff.
Death metal - Cannibal Corpse really aren`t all that...and from black metal
I guess I`d have to go with Burzum and Mayhem.

Melodeath....Edge of Sanity I suppose although outside of this group I`m not
sure how much they`re rated anyway. The best melodeath is still early IF,
AtG and DT. I`m nowhere near as bowled over by Insomnium as E and many
others are ( although I do like them ).

Machine Head are a band that seem to have suddenly become legends of the
metal scene despite the fact the bulk of their back catalogue is either
boring or absolute crap.

I have also seen Opeth named as the 'future' of metal, along side
Meshuggah, which I think is slightly OTT. Now for me Meshuggah are
over-rated, but that's because I just can't see what all the fuss is
