It looks like things have settled down. Anyone try the newer HR
Links, and if so, how do you like them? I'm looking for a dark mpc
that doesn't cost $700.00. I like a larger chamber and tip and don't
care too much for the very bright mpc offerings on the market now. I
need a back up for my current setup. Right now I'm using a Bamber
Jazz #10 with a standard 2 screw lig. I had been playing on a metal
STM 7* but wasn't getting the volume I wanted.

The Vandoren HR V16s are very nice, Linkish pieces. I played their 7,
7* equivalents for about 18 months before getting one of the new
Vintage HR lInks. The Link is a little louder, or maybe just takes
air differently, but the sounds of both the Vandorens and the Link are
in the Slant Sig Link world. I also played one of the new metal Links
and found it to be really good, but not something I needed. (Before
the new HR pices of the last year and a half I was playing a ****
Master Link opened to 6*, so a good copy of a ToneMaster was not a
good buy.

I used to work with a guy who put baggies over his mouthpiece on break
to keep the reed wet, we always used to refer to that as "safe sax."

Everything I read about the new Link vintage pieces is positive. You might
consider Kessler's trail period offer. If you don't like it, send it back..

I like the Doc Tenney slant sig 7* and Otto Link Millenium 7* pieces for
darkness.

I use fibracell or Legere reeds all the time on tenor now. On bari
it's the rico plasticover. I like the consistency of these reeds, only
problem is that when you use them if it's a bad day you have to blame
yourself instead of the reed. I'll take a look at Kessler's page and
see if anything looks interesting, thanks for the info. I have used
WWBW but the service has gotten very bad.

I have a relatively recent Link HR Tone Edge, marked 8. It measures at
a 7* plus a .001" or so, i.e. about .106

I play it with a Légère 2 Studio Cut and the sound is superb. It's as
close to a Getz sound as my poor old chops can come.

I'd recommend that, before spending a load of bread you get a couple
of eBay Link Tone Edges and try a wider opening with a softer reed.
You might find that the sound is what you're after.
