C'mon, at least some of you guys must've liked Vulgar Display and/or Far
Beyond Driven?
I`m enitrely ambivalent towards them. Neither offend me but I wouldn`t
choose to listen to them nor care if I never heard them again.
Normally in threads like these I get tempted to listen to the band/
album in question. However in this case I just haven't that desire.

Speaks volumes.
I know what you mean when audiophile and TJ were going on about how
over-rated metallica is I had to listen to Ride The Lightning. It's
still just as awesome as I remember from the other 1000 times I've heard it. |

I do generally spin some Pantera about once a year, but I also do the
same for those bands I don't like but the denizens of AMS feel I aught
to like. JP, Anthrax (Belladonna Era) and Megadeth, though saying
that I do like JP a great deal more than the other two.
I can`t remember the last time I listened to Pantera by choice...I doubt it
was this decade. |

Or lets look at classics. I have only listened to RiB once this
year. I still think it's one of the best albums ever. Going by your
logic, the best albums ever made are constantly changing dependent on
what's flavour of the month. Or my list for album of the decade,
those are not in constant rotation, but are still damn good albums.
I`ve been listening to RiB quite regularly for 23 years, there`s no way it`s
still going to pull 3-4 listens a week! Checking lastfm I`ve played it 7
times this year which I think is pretty good for an album I first heard so
long ago. For the record ( and because I quite like arsing about with
lastfm! )
RiB - 7
HA - 6
SoH - 6
CI - 5
HtC - 5
SNM - 5
SitA - 3
DI - 2
GHUA - 1
DiM - 1/2
UA - 0
I`ve played the new Mastodon almost as many times as all the Slayer albums
put together this year...but I still think classic Slayer destroys
Mastodon!!
Slayer have warranted a total of 3 listens this year according to
lastfm. I would guess that RiB and HA have probably had 4 or 5 listens
via cd this year.... as for the rest minimal at best. |

I do think it's retarded to only rate a band/album on the amount of
listens they get and if you're still playing them. Just because you
change, the music stays the same. So if you thought highly of
something 10 years ago, why should it change now (speaking of specific
albums here, rather than trends/genres/ that go out of fashion).
While I agree with you for the most part above, there is something to
be said for changing tastes.
Yes but I have found that changing tastes is a very slow, glacial
paced process. I don't suddenly find I like an artist/genre on one
day when I didn't the next.
It's taken me 26 years to appreciate a Megadeth album. 20 years to
listen to a JP album and not turn it off within minutes. King Diamond
was another acquired taste. Some of these processes are still on-
going.

For example, I like certain types of "world music" (god I hate that
term) a lot more than as a teenager when I'd dismiss all of that as
rubbish. Conversely, I only really like a handful of the traditional
metal bands I grew up with ... the rest aren't *bad* per se, I just
rate the cream of other genres much higher.
I suspect there are some changes in musically taste as someone grows
up. However, for me personally my music taste has been pretty much
constant since the age of 16-17. Plus at that age, back in the 80's I
didn't have access to the amount of music I do now, nor the typical
teenager of today does. Some things go in phases, but I generally go
back to stuff.

Very easily. I listen to it. I will compare it to the bands previous
albums (if any). I'll compare it the similar bands. I'll see if I

as I move on to more new things. However if I think an album is good,
it remains good when I come back to it for a re-listen.
I have no disagreements with this.

I've never denied RiB as being great.

I do listen to stuff from the 60's/70's/80's at least occasionally.
Matter of fact one of the albums that's been getting a lot of plays
the past month or so is Kansas-Masque, (1975).

True enough, but after a passage of time, somethings just don't mean
so much to me anymore. There is always the burn out of albums played a
lot of times.

It was an example, it had nothing to do with whether you liked it or
not. Notice how I refer to myself and then go on to make the point
that your classic albums would be what ever you are playing this
month. As the months go by and you get bored those classic albums
are constantly changing.

Again it has nothing to do with what you are listening to at the
moment. Just the opposite in fact. It's albums from past that you
don't play that often but you still know they are great.
You have just proved my point, it's all about the flavour of the
month.

Maybe you shouldn't OD on a particular album while it is in its "good"
phase. Rather pace yourself and mix things up a bit, or a lot
dependent on the amount of CD's you can listen to.
Now that I am feeling better, I am listening to more and so I am not
just concentrating on new stuff, but can go back and listen to old
stuff.

You just need to expand that to 30/40 year old albums (I go back to
the 30's for some of blues). Just listening to flavour of the month
albums would be tedious for me. I need new and old stuff.

No, just a general guess.
How Tom thinks
1-5 listens - "I can't rate this album yet"
I like to listen to an album at least three times before attempting
rating it. It's only fair.
6-10 listens - "I like this album, it's good"
11-15 listens - "I am getting bored, it's a bad album"
If previous albums by said band got 40-50-75 listens, then yes.
I guess I'm the easy target.
Yup. You're so up tight it's as though someone has shoved a stick up
your arse.
E.
Someone has to be all arsey.
Tom
I cosign tom's logic. I definitely need 3 full listens before I feel
I can adequately judge an album. Anything that doesn't make it to 3
full listens is an "I'm not sure/it sucked so bad I couldnt listen to
it enough to judge it" description. |
