Here are my top ten favorite bands I would say I like all of these bands
equally on level or another I know most of these bands have released
some crap albums but this is more an overall list. It was hard as hell
keeping this down to ten bands.

Iron Maiden
Slayer
Megadeth
Overkill
Metallica
Iced Earth
Nevermore
Black Sabbath
Testament
Judas Priest

recommend on here.

I have a slight problem with putting Metallica into a top 10 list...whilst I
adore the first 3 albums ( and most of the 4th ) they then spent 20 odd
years being crap. I like DM but it`s not enough to really elevate them back
in. My 9 definates all have a really strong and consistent body of work (
it`s also why I`m hesitant to put Emperor or Morbid Angel and why they kind
of rotate that 10th position ).

And here lies the problem, as favourite album and band can to some
extent be interchangeable. Now this list didn't ask for your list of
most consistent bands, the fact that you, Ian, use that as a criteria
shouldn't be relevant to anyone else.

Personally I look to my favourite albums for a starting base for any
such list, but that is just me. I might then incorporate consistency.

Metal only:

Black Sabbath
Mercyful Fate
Opeth
Megadeth
Prong
Morbid Angel
Nevermore
Slayer
At the Gates
Therion / Cathedral (the latter for consistency)

I'm impressed by the love for Sleep. They'd be just barely bubbling
under for me.

Great list ( although Iced Earth are way too inconsistent to get anywhere
near a top 10...doubtful even a top 50 ). My top 9 is set pretty much in
stone nowadays

Maiden
Slayer
Megadeth
Sabbath
Manowar
Voivod
Kreator
Nevermore
Death

( that`s in no order past the top 3 ).

10th spot kinda rotates...Metallica, Morbid Angel, Finntroll, Emperor.

Non metal would be

The Pogues
Levellers
The Jam
Dead Kennedys
The Cure
Jethro Tull
Carter USM
The Wonder Stuff
Frank Turner
Marillion

Don't think it wasn't something that went through my mind, however the
fact remains that two of my three favourite metal albums are both by
metallica, and as bad as some of their material is, those two albums
were enough for them to make my list. I could have chosen Morbid
Angel, Korpiklaani, Amon Amarth, Immortal, Clutch, Death Angel,
Destruction, Yob, Sodom, or Death but i figured that I like RtL and
MoP more than anything by those bands. I guess Slayer are the only
other contender who were in with a real shout, HA and RiB are two of
my favourite albums, however I think if I just compare the good albums
by both then Metallica would be ahead of Slayer.

Consistency is obviously a factor, however there are a handful of
albums that are just so damn good that they change your whole life,
and for me RtL and MoP are in that category.

I'd thought Therion would be thrown out for all the albums they've
done you don't like.

They were only mentioned by DC and myself. I almost put cathedral
then I remembered sleep. Vitus also *JUST* missed making the list
although I guess they were ahead of cathedral.

They recorded three of my favorite metal albums, so they've earned
their spot.
