I don't remember seeing this on a.m.j.p., and would be curious to see
some lists.

Not limited to metal - your favorite vocalists of all time, regardless
of the music.

Guess I'll start:

1. Louis Armstrong
2. Lisa Gerrard
3. Johnny Cash
4. King Diamond
5. Sinead O'Connor
6. Jaz Coleman
7. Jim Morrison / Jeff Martin (yeah, I know...)
8. BB King
9. Dio
10. Mike Patton (post-The Real Thing)

An extremely tough list. As always, subject to change, etc. etc. blah
blah

A strong caveat here is that many of the best vocals I have ever heard
were not commercially recorded artists like the ones above - they were
part of music festivals or semi-organized concerts around the world.

Funny how I hate Jim Morrison but think Jeff Martin is awesome.

I`ll just forego metal otherwise it would look the same as my metal list!
It`s my favourite genre so would bag all my votes.

Outside the glory of metal I`d plump for

Tori Amos
Shane MacGowan
Jello Biafra
Kate Rusby
Eliza Carthy
Ian Anderson
Fish
Mark Chadwick
Freddie Mercury
Robert Smith
Tom Jones

Not necessarily the most gifted singers, same as metal, just the ones I like
the voice of...and of course perform songs that I like!

There's really too many to pick from. And it all comes down to the
songs. Best singer, bad songs, who cares.
Good singer, great songs, interested.

I think you should go and listen to the new Porcupine Tree album, as
I think you're missing something you're going to end up liking a lot.

it's an acquired taste, but I think it qualifies at singing. Udo is
the type of vocalist that you either love or hate. He is also the
only old school vocalist on the list whose vocals have improved as
he's grown older, so that is saying something too.

His vocals have improved, really?? Not from what i have listened to. I
think he is a horrible vocalist but it worked with Accept, although I
was only a casual fan because of his horrible vocals.

Only one singer/vocalist needs to be mentioned...............

Farrokh Bulsara............AKA Freddie Mercury

Nuff said!!

:-)

Hard to believe he has been gone so long, November 24, 1991. I
remember hearing about his passing on TV and I was very saddened. Also
on the very same day, Eric Carr passed away and that hit me harder
because I personally knew him and his parents. He was a nice guy and
his parents were one of the nicest couple in the world and losing
Pauly (Eric's real name was Paul Charles Caravello) was devastating
for them. Its is really true that only the good die young Sad

If you never really liked him I wouldn't expect you to like him now.

He's a good metal vocalist, but singing is a stretch. I haven't
heard his more recent stuff, so I don't know how improved he is.

Not really horrible. I mean there are a lot of current metal
vocalists who are a lot worse than he is.
