By choice or through mainstream media? Perhaps things are different over
your side of the pond. Queen are probably the most played band on radio and
tv in the UK alongside The Beatles ( Queen`s Greatest Hits is the best
selling album of all time in the UK...no ACDC album is in the top 50...and
you`d pretty much *never* heard ACDC on mainstream radio here ).
Quote: When is the last time you heard about Queen postponing a show?
I`ve lost track of what this current incarnation of Queen is up to ( the one
with 2 original members that occasionally plays big arena shows with a
different singer ) but Queen as an ongoing project ceased to be about 17
years ago when Freddie Mercury died. They generally used to play huge
stadium shows in their last 5-6 years and I don`t remember them being famous
for cancelling shows or anything...but then I never did see them live.
Not that this has much to do with who is the better singer...obviously you
can be entitled to your own opinion and there are plenty of less than gifted
singers who perform in my favourite bands ( Megadeth and Slayer are 2 of my
all time favourites!! ) but I`d never claim Mustaine or Araya are "great
singers". To me, the very idea that Johnson is / was a better singer than
Mercury is laughable. |

They were touring with Paul Rodgers and even recorded an album with
him, under the moniker of Queen and Paul Rodgers. It was quite
forgettable. Recently their collaboration with Rodgers has come to
end, and I haven't seen anything since. Not that I am avid follower
of May and Co's every activity.

Thank God that it came to an end cause Rogers was butchering the Queen
songs. I also agree that the studio collaboration was very
forgettable. Does anyone know who played bass while they were Queen
and Paul Rogers cause I know that John Deacon refused to do it. He
stated in an interview a while back that he didn't think it was
appropriate.
While I love Rodgers in Free and Bad Company he just didn't fit
Queen. Mercury and his voice is just too iconic for anyone else to do
it justice. Even if they got Percy (Robert Plant for the
numpties.. .), who I regard as the best vocalist ever, even he
couldn't fit into the role. Not that I think Mercury could do LZ
justice either. Some bands have iconic singers that just can't be
replaced.
I have no idea who the bassist was. I think Deacon was right at the
end of the day (with the benefit of hindsight, obviously), the project
with Rodgers just didn't work out, but kudos to May and Taylor for
having the balls to try.

Quite scary.
Off-topic discussions keep our groups going and why NG's of more
commercially successful bands like Metallica and Maiden have died out.

By random listens of the radio in my car, the only time I really

I can't believe it's been 17 years. Time flies.
And yes, it's laughable that someone considers Brian Johnson a
better singer/vocalist than FM.

I don't know how good he sounds now, but I thought Paul was a pretty
good rock vocalist back in the day. I also liked the albums he did
with Jimmy Page as the Firm. At least some of the songs. Of course,
it's been ages since I listened to them. I think they went their
separate ways after just two albums. At least as far as I know.

it's an acquired taste, but I think it qualifies at singing. Udo is
the type of vocalist that you either love or hate. He is also the
only old school vocalist on the list whose vocals have improved as
he's grown older, so that is saying something too.
He's a good metal vocalist, but singing is a stretch. I haven't
heard his more recent stuff, so I don't know how improved he is.
Tom
Have you heard Udo's collaboration with Doro on a cover of "Breaking
The Law"? Not exactly recent.

I haven't heard a new Udo album/song in it's got to be 15 years.
I have Animal House and Mean Machine. I believe I heard one album
after that, and then we parted ways so to speak. I don't think I've
listened to those albums once since then.

No, I never did get to meet Rob and the closest I got to him was
feeling his fingers as he held the hand tightly of a female at New
York City's Roseland Ballroom. After he let go, venue security took
her away and rightly so since it was hot in that venue. I was
starting to feel faint/overheated and moved to where there wasn't much
people and cooled off.
Definitely good show. For him solo and also Judas Priest with Tim
Owens, the smaller venues were perhaps the better performances I've
ever seen of both. I still remember what was it, 2002 or 2003 when I
saw Judas Priest three times in three days: New York City,
Philadelphia at the Electric Factory, and Washington, D.C. at the now-
defunct venue that is where the Washington Nationals ballpark is.

Wow that is pretty awesome, it's too bad you didn't get a chance to
meet Halford. I can't imagine what I would say to him.
Seeing the Halford band in a club was something else, especially since
Rob's higher range was still intact. Priest really blew the doors
off a small venue even with Tim Owens singing the old songs, which was
disappointing for me they were like this well oiled metal monster
machine crammed into a small space fighting to break out. |

wonder which is worst, her pop music or the local radio. I keep on
telling her silence is golden, or that the art of conversation is

I don't remember seeing this on a.m.j.p., and would be curious to see
some lists.
Not limited to metal - your favorite vocalists of all time, regardless
of the music.
Guess I'll start:
1. Louis Armstrong
2. Lisa Gerrard
3. Johnny Cash
4. King Diamond
5. Sinead O'Connor
6. Jaz Coleman
7. Jim Morrison / Jeff Martin (yeah, I know...)
Funny how I hate Jim Morrison but think Jeff Martin is awesome.

I don't know if any one of you have noticed this, but Ripper has to
have more English as a second language fans than he does anyone
else. I believe this is due to the lack of emotion and unpleasant
mid range (not to mention some of the lyrics he's had to sing over the
years, especially on Demo and his recent solo release) probably
translates better to someone who is not familiar with the English
language.
I did not put Ripper, Ralf Scheepers or Sean Peck on my list even
though I like all 3 of them to some degree because I feel they are too
Halford-like (to say the least). The same goes for Tony Martin who I
feel really was one of the greats (for a brief moment in time) but he
cops too much from Dio IMO and his flamed burned bright for that
Headless Cross moment and blew out just as quickly as it was lit. |
