I guess it`s just time to accept I`m getting old but I`ll try and fight
it...is it just me or has there been a dearth of decent debut albums the
last couple of years?
2009...I have 3 debut albums. Of those one ( Tenet ) is a spin off from
bands that have been around for donkey`s years, another ( Fleshgod
Apocalypse ) is a spin off from an older death metal band...which just
leaves Woe of Tyrants.
Even last year I only have Gama Bomb, Warbringer, Fimbultyr and Alestorm.
And I`d only rate one of those as great. Who am I missing??! |

Could be. I know I have found a lot of bands I like, but not
necessarily is it their debut album. Just their debut album to me.

i know you said you didn't think much of Havoc, but i would think you
would at least say it's decent.
isn't the Razor of Occam their debut?
when did the Swashbuckle debut come out? i only have the new one and do
like it.

Ok of the top of my head a few new bands that I have enjoyed this
year. Some are not that special or original, but I have still enjoyed
them nonetheless. I am sure there are more, just I have not had the
chance to fully check them out.
Cormorant
Mordium
A Hill To Die Upon
Savage Messiah
A Few Against Many
Odium
Bel'Lakor
Chickenfoot
Steel Panther..;-)

Cormorant
I have this downloaded but haven`t heard it yet.
This is probably the best of the bunch, but by the end of the album
they have completely changed style. It's all quite bizarre. However
in places the Cormorant is really good.

Savage Messiah
A Few Against Many
Just worked my way through this lots myspace pages, most of it sounds
alright but nothing that really makes me want to go out and listen to whole
albums. Savage Messiah sounded a bit too precise, it was thrashy but it
didn`t make me want to thrash.
I have spun most at least once and they all had something that didn't
make me delete them straight way. None of them will be AotY
contenders, but will get some more spins.

There are 16 bands with this name!
The album I have is At The Bottom

Pretty much like me and Augury. Anyway Bel'Lakor are very much in the
vain of Insomnium.

Meh - sounds exactly like the sort of tired old black metal I was moaning

Yeah it is decent...I just haven`t kept it on my hard drive so had forgotten
about it.

Yep, you`re right - I`d missed that one. Although that`s another which is
just a spin off from another band, I think most of the band are also in
Destroyer 666.

I liked Swashbuckle but again, didn`t keep it on my hard drive ( nor buy
it ) so I obviously didn`t like it that much. Haven`t heard the new one.
Love this. |

They are pretty good actually, kind of 80`s German thrash sounding.
With Franky, you never know what you're going to get.

Bel'Lakor
I heard this earlier in the year but I can`t remember much about it.
Pretty much like me and Augury. Anyway Bel'Lakor are very much in the
vain of Insomnium.
I remember thinking it was OK but I haven`t felt compelled to listen to it
again. I`ll give it another go this weekend I think.
I certainly enjoyed what I heard. Just like the Insomnium, I got hold
of it just before I got really ill. It certainly will be a contender
at the end of the year. Some things make an immediate impact,
Bel'Lakor was one of them. Then again at the time, I was eagerly
awaiting the new Insomnium and maybe it just filled the gap until the
real thing was released.

Revocation...a good solid thrash album with a hint of tech death in the
riffing department. It`s from last year, apparently they`re about to release
a new album...I`ll be looking out for it.
Krallice - umm...post rock progressive black metal? 10 minute long songs
with a bazillion time changes and riffs. I liked it, plenty going on in each
song although it`s probably not something I`ll go back to often. One of them
used to be in Gorguts apparently.
I'll have a listen over the next few days. Got a few new leaks to
have a listen to, the live Onslaught, the new Evile (without voice
over), Against Music Industry.
