It's well known that many people don't like Steve Morse's sound, whereas
Ritchie Blackmore sounds sweet to the ear. I was surprised to discover,
then, that they both use the same brand of amplifier. While amplifiers
differ, it was also interesting to note that the only signature models
made by Engl are the Ritchie Blackmore and Steve Morse models. Funny, eh?

Of course the tone comes from the fingers not the gear. Morse's phrasing,
vibrato and muting are offputting in the context of Deep Purple.
If Ritchie played through Steve's amp he's still sound like Ritchie and vice
versa
Listen to Ritchie using a Vox, Marshall or Engl he's still identifiably
Ritchie
Listen to Steve using an Ampeg (early Dregs), Peavey, Marshall or Engl (I
think those were his main amps) he's still identifiably Steve.
The guitar plays a bigger part than the amp as well - especially the pickups
