Whichever one people decide they are saying a good deal about that
artist's other powers. For example, if Dylan cannot sing then doesn't
it make it all the more remarkable that he has influenced so many
other singers?

What is singing, I wonder? Is it an ability to faithfully reproduce a
series of notes with the human voice or is it the ability to
communicate emotion and ideas via the human voice?

Dylan's singing has touched me to the core of my being. Doesn't that
qualify him as a good singer? And if he can touch me like that is his
failure to touch someone else with his singing his lack or theirs?

As for Cohen ... he's just a bad singer. Good hat, though.

OTOH, a bad singer is the test of a good song.

Listening to Cohen's Hallelujah. His singing is way off the notes but the
song comes through. Eventually.

Actually I'm joking about Cohen being a bad singer. The man is a
magnificent singer. He makes me believe in the song.

And he lives in a tower, you know.

One thing I keep hearing from non-Dylan fanatics is that Dylan can no
longer sing like he used to. They say his voice his shot.

Leonard Cohen does sound the same as he always did. So does Mick Jagger,
Paul McCartney, Neil Young, and everyone else from the old days.

Dylan sounded very different on Nashville Skyline too. Perhaps he has
more than one voice.

Yes, he's a thousand voices deep. But we're deep in the doo doo these days.

Don't you have time for older folks, really real?

Must everyone be faithful to their first baby squawk or can we allow
them to develop right to the end?

Cohen is a poet turned singer-songwriter... While Dylan is the singer-
songwriter turned poet...

Cohen might have the better voice today, physically, but I feel Dylan
will always be the better singer...

Don't forget Elvis Costello! By the way, anyone know if Costello's
show 'Spectacle' has been renewed for another season?

Maybe the question should be who sings better Dylan or Cohen?
Dylan moves me while Cohen depresses me.
Cheers

Elvis is from a later time and we would expect his voice to sound the
same. If only his songs sounded the same. I thought Elvis said he
wouldn't be around for his artistic decline.

That said, I eagerly await Elvis's next album, produced by T-Bone and
with bluegrass players. I doubt it will be his Blood on the Tracks but I
keep waiting and hoping.

I got a hold of an 'advance' copy. It's really good. It's got a few
older songs on it that are updated with this new sound.

Cohen's voice is now deeper and richer than the young Cohen's... he's
the Jewish Johnny Cash... and with a more interesting delivery...

Everyone but Bob. Figures.

It is what it is, and always has been... Bob's voices have always
caused comment, especially about whether he had one or not. I always
considered myself immune to the changes in his voice, but I have to
admit I miss the voice that sang "Series of Dreams" -- the voice of Oh
Mercy and Under the Red Sky.

Oh well.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Say you're passing a little pub and you look through the window
and you see all the people eating and talking and carrying on...
You can watch outside the window...
you can see them all be very real with each other...
as real as they're gonna be.
Because when you walk into the room, it's over.
You won't see them being real anymore...
Things have changed.
