Quote: Cohen's voice is now deeper and richer than the young Cohen's... he's
the Jewish Johnny Cash... and with a more interesting delivery...
Are you so sure that it isn't just the quality of the microphones that
has improved? |

Microphones haven't improved since the 50s. The sound systems in concert
have greatly improved. To my ears Cohen's voice is darker and a little
rougher. For sure his range is lower. |

Yeah... a mic that lowers the voice... a brilliant use of technology...

Young or old, Cohen still makes my flesh crawl. I wouldn't deny that he
has a talent for pithy imagery, but I dislike him on pretty much every
other count. |

I don't know what is worse, you feeling this way, or you admitting it in
a Bob Dylan newsgroup. |

Dear Gill,
Obligatorily, may i call you Gill? Hi how are ya? I hope this finds
you well and getting weller.

First off, again, and this from a book "Various Positions" by Ira
Bruce Nadel:

In the car to Newport, Cohen confided to his lawyer Marty Machat that
he had little confidence in his singing. "None of you guys know how to
sing," Machat replied. "When I want to hear singers, I go to the
Metropolitan Opera."
{
As quoted elsewhere.
That said, as to whether or no bob can sing, different dylna fans will
offer different proofs. Some will suggest "Moonshiner" off BS1-3:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_zFzFzD8Ro
Certainly he veers off pitch on occasion, but so did Sinatra.
Others, like muhSelf will point to SP's "Belle Isle":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jsr82qHBtEM
AnyOne to argue, try singing it yrSelf.
Or his "Saving Grace" from Massey Hall '80 (dig bob's little 3chord
guitar solo):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBNG2qWCC08
Ya'll pick 'em.
Any of these performances outstrips Leonard's best vocal, at best
sonorous baritone.
That's was; what is?
Arbitrarily.
Hear Leonard recent; "Anthem" from Glastonbury '08:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvcX5RMBwbk
Hear bob "LaRS" (including singalong audience Zaragoza June 23rd
2008):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCrDDQroPl0
From '09, bob's "One More Cup of Coffee":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwZyUz10Hls
From '09, Leonard's "Hallelujah"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_VcMTcXj7c
Based on these arbitrary data, i'd say bob's voice is not so frayed as
i'd thought based on a show i saw a year and a half ago; Lenny's
sonorous baritone sinking bassward holds up well.
My judgment: I'd see them in anything, so i'll stand in line.
You decide.
As to who sings better, here Nina does bob:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk0VTl-cQTY
& does Lenny 2:

I never thought there was any doubt. Whatsoever. You cited some
examples. There are many others. (I'd add the same about the earlier-
brought-up Tom Waits, incidentally.) This might be the reason for the
feeling of let down that many people have.

Thanks for that.
No contest.
Lenny is truly terrible.
