I know E likes to wait till halfway through january but I`m fairly
convinced anything I haven`t already heard isn`t going to make that much
of an impression on me now...and I`m gigged out for the year. So here
are my favourite 20 albums and gigs of the year plus my non metal picks.
* Snip*
LET THE INSULTS BEGIN!!!

As always, I will not try to put mine in any particular order. Here's
a bunch of albums I will still be listening to in 2009.

L' Autrichienne - Jucifer
Watershed - Opeth
Smile - Boris

Angl - Ihsahn
The Fathomless Mastery - Bloodbath

I like the bulk of that list...apart from some of the stoner stuff of
course. Never heard of Santeria. I have made a few alterations to my
list, bunged in the non metal stuff and have an all new official, final
top 30!

1. Godspeed on the Devil`s Thunder - Cradle of Filth
2. Tulimyrsky - Moonsorrow
3. Watershed - Opeth
4. A Sense of Purpose - In Flames
5. The Art of War - Sabaton

I'm sorry to say I have not heard this yet. It could probably make my
list as well if its as good as the last.

If you like this I'm surprised you wouldn't like Witch or Graveyard.
The stoner stuff I listen to most leans toward psychedelic and retro
in the vein of King Crimson or Heep. Although I like things a bit
fuzzy like Pentagram. That said, I like the old school Monster Magnet
sound as well.

This would have made my list if it were a bit less polished and a bit
more sloppy (drunken).

Does Boris really fit into stoner?

They do for me. However to avoid this very conversation I left out
the latest Earth album, The Sword, Blood Ceremony, etc... I am happy
lumping doom, drone, as well as the traditional Fu Manchu stoner bands
all in one group. After all they are cut from the same cloth.

Stoner seems to accommodate a wide range.

I agree. I spend a good amount of time at Stonerrock.com and they
review everything from garage rock to drone to doom to Lair of the
Minotaur.

The main track is my song of the year, they`re moving closer and closer
to Bathory worship with the odd bit of folk.

I left this out as I thought it was classed as an EP not an album.

I`ve never heard Graveyard...this Bigelf didn`t fit my definition of
stoner at all. It sounded closer to early Alice Cooper/David Bowie to
me. I`m happy to hear more of this sort of stuff.

I thought it was great fun for a while but the novelty does wear off.
They were a blast live at Bloodstock.- Hide quoted text -

Yeah it is but...it`s over an hour long!! I can`t seriously call a 68
minute 5 track CD an EP! There`s one song on it longer than the whole of
Reign in Blood...that`s an album in my book...

Just remembered another album that should have been on my list,
Serpentcult - Weight of Light. I can't imagine it's everyone's cup of
tea, but it's a damn fine album if you ask me.
