Hi,
I am new to the group. It looks kinda like a ghost town. Is there
anyone still interested in participating in this forum?

I am posting in a few groups, looking for ideas. My topic is
"Mandolinists who may have influenced Bill Monroe." So far, I have
been pointed toward Mac and Bob, the Prairie Ramblers, Ted Hawkins
(Skillet Lickers) and mandolinists who recorded with Asa Martin.
I have been going through this exercise for the last couple of years
in which I recursively investigate the music of my favorite artists'
influences. I have worked, say, from Willie Nelson back through Bob
Wills and Lefty Frizzell, back to Jimmy Rodgers and the Skillet
Lickers. I also looked into the Carter Family and other pioneers.
One of my top favorites is Bill Monroe. As a mandolin player myself,
I don't think my instincts (in terms of melody) are in line with the
way he played, but I still love to listen to him. I am looking for
the sources of his blues influence and jazz influence, particularly.
I have read about Leadbelly and Mississippi John Hunt being favorites
of his, as well as Chick Hurt. Someone has told me that the real root
of Bill's influence is jazz, not old-time.
Any thoughts? |
