I once saw this on the big screen, and despite it being
such an intimate film, the pan-and-scan treatments in
the video version is truly atrocious. Despite that,
I really enjoyed the second time around. The late
Dirk Bogarde plays a dying father and Jane Birkin his
daughter. She takes after him and is gifted with
the talent for life, and the two have a great time
stealing out of the house at night bar-hopping, despite
the fact that Birkin holds a grudge against his neglect
early in her life. (He admits to having no memory of
her before she turns 20.) It is such a joy to see Birkin
in this role -- her best that I've ever seen. The
French-Spanish mother, on the other hand, has become
rigid, fossilized with age. There is a lot of tension
and subtle power struggle over which language they
use (English vs French) and over religious views.
Coming on the heels of Tavernier's masterpiece
_A Sunday in the Country_, this film perhaps got
overlooked, but is really a wonderful bookend to _ASC_,
this time with the father-daughter relationship
told from the latter's point of view. Nice to hear
Birkin sing the end title, too.
