Three weeks ago, in frustration over being asked to do justice to
Flicker Alley's 173-film Georges Méliès DVD box in a 175 word Sight &
Sound capsule review, I started a blog that's aiming to feature 500-
word-plus reviews of each and every title, updated every night at
midnight my (UK) time.
I've uploaded twenty so far, with another 154 to go - but I'm enjoying
it so much that I'm definitely in it for the long haul. All being
well, the end will be reached by the end of October.
So do please feel free to have a rummage: it's at http://filmjournal.net/melies

Thank you for this, Michael. I tried to do a bunch of reviews for the
IMDB on the Melies discs, but couldn't do more than about 30 in addition
to the ones I've done over the years before giving up for lack of useful
things to say. I think that Melies is an important film maker, possibly
more for the bits and pieces that were lost rather than for his film
grammar, which properly went down under the weight of George Smith as
built upon by Griffith. We have lost much in our search for
verisimilitude -- not just the big performances, but the sheer joy of
performance, the sense of delight.

Mr Brooke...
I am an avid fan of eastern European animation (Trnka, Svankmayer, Barta),
and have a number of DVDs with a great deal of animation from this vital
*animation* region.
I notice at your blog no reference to Karel Zeman...though technicaly, not
animation in the understood sense. I am fascinated by his films, of which I
posess only a copy on laser-disc of his wonderful BARON PRASIL.
Are you aware of any effort to bring his films to a new audience?..or at
least preserve them.
I would have contacted you about this at your sites but there is no
*contact* offered there.
Thank You.

I also have the LD of Karel Zeman's BARON PRASIL (i.e. The Original
Fabulous Adventure of Baron Munchausen). It is brilliant. I wish that
and more of Zeman's work were available on DVD.

You're both absolutely right - Zeman is very clearly one of Méliès'
most obvious heirs (possibly even the most obvious), and I too wish
that there was more of his stuff available. I think there are some
Japanese DVD releases, but aside from a couple of unsubtitled VHSes
that I picked up in Prague there's very little else even in his native
country.

That is an absolute shame. His films are quite extraordinary. Delicate and
imaginative use of live action in combination with animation...almost like a
Victorian engraving come to life.
I am fortunate to have gotten some DVD-r copies of a not very good quality
print of his JULES VERNE and a documentary showing Zeman working in his
studio. Beyond this, there is nothing else. When his films were first made
they must have been glorious...specially on the big screen.
Thank you.

For anyone not familiar with Karel Zeman's films, here are two examples...
The *Introduction* (the opening sequence) of his marvelous BARON PRASIL is
an engaging bit of history, beginning with some footprints...

Just to update my original post, I'm now 32 films in, and have now
covered 1896-99.
Highlights include comprehensive coverage of the 'Dreyfus Affair'
cycle (including synopses that identify what's happening on screen,
and historical contextualisation), and key works such as 'The Four
Troublesome Heads' and 'Cinderella'.
Updates continue every day midnight (British Summer Time)
