Does anyone have recommendations for a usenet newsreader that runs on
the Mac? (yes, I'm switching...)

Unison.

Good reader. Flexible sigs. OS X support has been seamless across all versions.

I'm using Thunderbird for both email and news.

It's free from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

(or if you want versions for other languages or locations, start at
www.mozilla.com and follow the links for Thunderbird).
