REDBELT is a thinking man's macho movie (...if there is such a
thing). Its writer-diector David Mamet is back in his SPARTAN mode --
this time with Chiwetel Ejiofor -- and the result lives up to that
considerable promise. Second billing goes to Tim Allen for his star
power, but clearly *should* go to Emily Mortimer. (Joe Mantegna's
here too, of course). Useful reminder: although REDBELT's milieu is
martial arts, this is a movie by a playwright ...so, e.g., action
figures will *not* be sold in the lobby. Most importantly... lo, I
was engrossed enough to justify my first-run ticket (...which seems
likely to be rare in coming weeks, afaics). REDBELT is well
recommended.

Tim Allen, the FUNNY guy?  Is this a comedy?  If not, was HE dramatic?
If so, how did he do?

He's good ...and non-comic. (I didn't even recognize him at first.)
Actually, he's good enough that I was looking forward to a larger
role. And, btw, I've appreciated this movie more since I posted...
though I'll admit to having to fend off a certain snobby smugness vis
a vis usual martial arts fare. (E.g., I can see why this opened in
only a fourth of FORBIDDEN KINGDOM's theaters.)
