An hour ago, a package arrived - The Seven Addictions and Five
Professions of Anita Berber. Subtitle: Weimar Berlin's Priestess of
Depravity. How can I resist? (as Sally B. might say.)
Ms Berber did appear in a couple of German films c.1918, one with
Conrad Veidt. But the scandalous one is The Story of Dida Ibsen with
Werner Krauss. This has a scene with a snake and riding crop. A maid
flogs the husband while Dida (Berber) moans (silently) in ecstasy.
And youse thought Brooks was erotic.

Actually, Berber appeared in quite a few films with Conrad Veidt,
including DIDA IBSENS GESCHICHTE. I've seen a few of her films,
including DIDA, but have never seen any indication that she was such a
wild woman. Apparently, her reputation must have come from her off-
screen antics.

  Now *that's* an understatement.

Anita Berber was living (and before long, dead) proof that drugs are
bad for you.

Karl Toepfer's "Empire of Ecstasy" discusses Berber at length;
particularly her contribution to the "nude modern dance" craze of the
Weimar years, but he also mentions her many bad habits.

TT

An Otto Dix painting of her (mid twenties) showed a woman looking
like a debauched old bag. Of course this could have been artist
"license".
