It has occurred to me that the Rorschach chcracter from The Watchmen and
Jaview Bardem's executioner character from No Country for Old Men, really
have a lot in common. If you replace some of the bizarre flourishes of
Bardem's character, like the coin tossing and the pneumatic cattle killer,
with Rorschach's mask and trenchcoat, the two are very nearly identical.
The most substantial difference was that Rorschach killed villains, whereas
Bardem killed *as* a villain, and although the morality of their actions is
of course the most important trait of a character, it reminds me of the
line from Indiana Jones - "It would take but a nudge to make you like me."
Tommy Lee Jones referred to Bardem's executioner as a "ghost," which is a
label that can equally be applied to Rorschach.
Moore shows it as an unsatisfactory justification for serial killing that
Rorschach is a "hero," which makes him more similar to Bardem's character
than different. So when we get to see how Rorschach went crazy, in The
Watchmen, will we also be learning something about Bardem's executioner? |
