Actually, quite a few serials had musical numbers.
The "mystery riders" in PHANTOM OF THE WEST (1930)
sang a song whenever they rode; an orchestral version
of that tune played under the main titles. Unfortunately,
the TV version of this serial used different music for
the titles and substituted generic background music
during the riding scenes -- so you can only hear the
song if you have an old 16mm rental library print or
a video version mastered from same.
Universal briefly tried making songs an integral part
of their serials -- possibly to make additional money
through sales of sheet music -- but the experiment
didn't last long. It began (and basically ended) with
three serials produced in 1936: THE PHANTOM RIDER
("Hidden Valley"), ACE DRUMMOND ("Give Me a Ship
and a Song"), and JUNGLE JIM ("I'm Taking the Jungle
Trail").
As I recall, there are also a few musical numbers in Universal's
MYSTERY OF THE RIVERBOAT (1944). And Ralph Byrd
sings quite a bit in THE VIGILANTE (1947 Columbia). There
are probably others, but those are the titles that immediately
spring to mind. |

Just remembered a couple others: the song
"Ride Along" is performed several times by
Dick Foran and company in RIDERS OF DEATH
VALLEY (1941). There's also a song with lyrics
that accompanies the main titles of Mascot's
THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1933), but I don't
remember it being performed in the body of the
serial. Same goes for the theme song to
ADVENTURES OF THE FLYING CADETS (1943). |

"Mystery of the River Boat" had Jimmie Dodd doing a musical number on
the boat. Much of "Chick Carter, Detective" took place in a night club
and there were several musical numbers. |

Kennedy's very cool video recorder where he is able to replay a
telephone conversation between Verna Gironda & Miss McMillan, being
able to listen to both sides of the conversation.
Another reference to Clutch's "colonade", misspelling of "colonnade", a
series of columns placed at regular intervals (Amer. Heritage
dictionary), where Miss McMillan is currently being held.
Cliffhanger: Uh-oh. Kennedy falls for Clutch's trap and rushes to save
Miss McMillann in the colonnade, the glass doors close and a poison gas
envelops them. That's it for them, I guess.

There sure the heck was. THE SHADOW (1940) starring Victor Jory. My
cherce for all-time most funnest Columbia serial. 15 episodes of action
and laughs. |

I have somebody "on the inside" at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (as
Columbia's video arm is now called), and the Shadow serial will almost
certainly NOT be issued on DVD -- unless the rumored new movie actually
materializes, in which case Sony will probably release the serial to
piggyback on whatever hype the new film generates. But that's still at
least a couple years away, if it happens at all.
In the meantime, our best hope -- our ONLY hope -- for seeing
legitimate Sony-released DVDs of Columbia serials is that the current
management of SPHE changes. The people in charge now couldn't care
less about serials -- in fact, they're not especially eager to release
ANY vintage Columbia films shot in black-and-white. |
