WOW! It's amazing it wasn't Frankie - it sounds just like him!
It is strangely apposite that the singer isn't Frankie Laine,
because Champion the Wonder Horse wasn't actually a horse. He was a
zebra. Technical problems with orthochromatic film meant that
animals with a single colour didn't appear well on film, while
animals with two colours did, but looked as though they were of a
single colour.
The effect was solved by the crew of "Mr Ed" who found that a zebra
actually looked like a horse when shot on orthochromatic film.
Subsequent TV shows such as "Champion the Wonder Horse" and "The
Lone Ranger" followed suit and used zebras.
The crew of "Skippy the Bush Kangaroo" solved their problem by
painting the kangaroo (who was in fact a wallaby) in tiger stripes.
However they came across a further problem when they found that for
close ups, the positioning of the stripes was critical.
Manufacturer's quality control of early film stock often left
something to be desired and it soon became apparent that different
batches of film stock required different patterns of stripes on
smaller animals. Therefore Skippy had to be repainted every time the
cameraman changed his batch of film. This led to an unfortunately
high casualty rate amongst the wallabies as it was found that they
didn't respond well to having the first coat of paint stripped off
with a blowtorch.
As RAlex might say, "Bollocks."

There are 12,000,000 sheep in Ontario.
Problem is 9,000,000 of them think they are people. |
