Hi,
My name is Dave Hudson and I'm a playwright who specializes in
musicals. I'd really like to make my next stage musical an adaptation
of a movie - and I'm soliciting folks here for possible ideas.
First of all, I'm not rich and I'm not famous. I'm having good success
in the regional market, and I'm even making some headway overseas in
the UK and South Africa - but I'm not a Stephen Sondheim. Getting the
rights to adapt a movie is fairly difficult and expensive, even on the
low end. So, the higher the profile of the film, the more expensive it
can get. For example, "Pretty Woman" wouldn't be a title I'd be going
after just based on the finances I know would be involved. On the
international end of things, one of my favorite films of all time is
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, but I'm fairly realistic about my chances of
getting the rights to a Best Foreign Language Film winner.
I'm soliciting this group, because I love films from overseas.
There's a lot more risk taken by filmmakers abroad, a lot more charm,
a lot more personality.
Comedies and Romantic Comedies tend to lend themselves to
musicalization more. Character-driven plots are also very helpful
(it's not easy to musicalize a motorcycle chase.)
So - I'm just putting out a call to everyone tuned in here for their
favorite films from all over the world. Character-driven, romantic
comedies are the stuff I'm looking for. Just throw out your favorite
titles, then I'll be hitting netflix and the independent video shops
for a while, whittling down the choices, then writing lots of letters,
asking permissions, negotiating rights, etc.
For now - I'd be forever grateful for your input.
Best,
Dave Hudson |
