close ups, the positioning of the stripes was critical.
Manufacturer's quality control of early film stock often left
something to be desired and it soon became apparent that different
batches of film stock required different patterns of stripes on
smaller animals. Therefore Skippy had to be repainted every time the
cameraman changed his batch of film. This led to an unfortunately
high casualty rate amongst the wallabies as it was found that they
didn't respond well to having the first coat of paint stripped off
with a blowtorch.
