Does anyone know if the Fostex DV-40 is capable of simple Time Code
Chase?
I can't see anything about it on their website and hoping that it is
just an oversight.
Thanks in advance.....

Michael,
This is one of the things this machine does best! It'll chase SMPTE in
every TC rate from 23.976 to 30 fps.

Thanx very much for the info.....
Given the learning curve that post has to deal with over utilizing
sound files as opposed to linear DAT tapes, I'm surprised that simple
timecode chase isn't considered / utilized MORE in syncing
double-system HD work, as it works very well with timecoded film, ala
Aaton and Arri generated code... I have had good luck with such in
Telecine...

Here in Philadelphia we use the DV-40 quite frequently with HD projects.
The HD cam and audio recorder (PD-6 so far) both record TC @ 23.98 and the
audio is recorded double system. We recommend using a Lockit feeding
Trilevel sync and code to the camera. During the downrez process, the DV-40
chases the HD Cam machine and the audio is applied to the Digi-Beta, or
whatever the resulting format is. You have to setup a -8 frame (or
so)offset in the DV-40 to allow for the video delay coming off the HD
machine.
This works really well. The DV-40 goes everywhere the HD machine does,
quickly.

I can attest to this. Jay and I have done tests to see how well a
double system setup would work in an HD production environment. We
shot with a sony 900 24p camera and recorded sound to PD-6 recorder.
Later, we were able to setup an autosyncing procedure that would
occur at the same time as downconversion. Using a sony F500 HD deck
and a DV-40 we were able to accomplish this with no angst at all. The
DV-40 chases F500 perfectly. We set this up prior to starting a long
form project that i am involved in that will be downconverted at Jays
facility. Unfortunately, the producers on this project decided to do
things the hard way and sync everything manually when the felt they
had the time. NO/LOW BUDGET. They also had issues with the 24p EDLs
that they also would work out later. You can lead a horse to
water....................
Of course test test test, make sure your clocks are referenced
properly-trilevel etc...
