dear newsgroup, i was recently told by a russian friend that the most
remarkable soviet actors were awarded the title of the people's artist
of the USSR. it seems like the title was perceived as a soviet oscar.

can anybody please provide a list of soviet actors who received the
honor? also some major films in which they acted. many thanks in

That title went to all kinds of artists, not just to actors. But if you see
"The Cranes are Flying" you will see two winners: Alexei Batalov and
Tatiana Samoilova. Batalov scored a hit with American audiences later with
his starring role in "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears" which was very
popular here.

Samoilova with her Jewish looks went out of fashion quite quickly,
like most female stars of her generation (Alla Larionova, Lyudmila
Khityaeva, etc). She briefly returned to stardom in 1966 when she
played Anna Karenina against her former husband Vasiliy Lanovoy.

On the other hand, Tatiana's father Evgeny was named the national
artist in 1974. A favourite actor of Meyerhold and Okhlopkov, Evgeny
played against Orlova in the Shining Path (1940) and against Ladynina
in At 6PM after the War (1944). This sex symbol of the Stalinist epoch
also played Schors in the Dovzhenko's movie of the same name. He is
now 92 but still playing at the Maly Theatre.

Seriozha,

Have you seen any/many Soviet historical epics? There seem to have been a
few made by Mikhail Rohmm about some naval admiral in the '50s?

Also Peter The Great with Cherkasov.

Are any of these older historical movies available? Can you tell us anything
about them?

Thanks. I've always been interested in these.

The only decent Soviet film in this category is Bondarchuk's 'War and
Piece'. His later epics - 'Waterloo' and 'Boris Godunov' - are of
minor interest, at least for me.

Also Peter The Great with Cherkasov.

The funny thing is that the movie was aired on the Russian TV several
hours ago. The great Alla Tarasova was enchanting as Peter's wife
Catherine, but she personally disliked all her film appearances.
Stanislavsky's favourite actress actually took offence when someone
mentioned her part in the movie.

But the film nevertheless was very popular and spawned a dozen of
rather poorly regarded imitations, including Pudovkin's 'Suvorov'
(1940) and 'Admiral Nakhimov' (1946), Romm's 'Admiral Ushakov' (1953),
Yutkevich's 'The Great Warrior Skanderberg', and the Ukrainian epic
about Bogdan Khmelnitsky. For me, these films represent the Stalinist
art at its worst.

Eistenstein's "Alexander Nevsky" and "Ivan the Terrible" should be
available from amazon.com

Cheers
