Question for Scott, Richard and any other ER-4 users on the group. I'm
planning to finally splash out on a pair of ER-4s and wonder if anyone
has had personal IEM ear moulds made for them, or whether everyone
just uses them as they come. If anyone has had them fitted, have they
ordered the earphones with the moulds in place or had the phones
retro-fitted. I don't have particularly weird shaped ears but have had
difficulty in the past getting other in-ear headphones to sit
comfortably and properly, and I'm thinking of leakage here. There's
nothing on the Etymotic website about moulds for any of their
earphones, just for their earplug range - obviously I'll ask them, but
I thought I'd ask the group too.

Secondly, anyone in London (or Newcastle), England, who could
recommend an audiologist centre to take ear impressions?

Thanks all, Jez Adamson

I had earmolds made for my ER4's but find that I prefer the sound of them
when using the foam earplugs much better...especially for music. Much better
isolation and much better bass although I do insert the earplugs as far into
my ear canal as possible.

I use the 3-flange ear tips. I think the foam are more comfortable but they
tend to come off of the plastic sleeve and lodge in my ear canal and it is
no fun trying to dig a piece of foam out of your ear with a Leatherman in a
dark club. I have been tempted to try the ear molds but I typically only
wear them for short periods of time and the stock flange tips have been
fine.

Hi Charles, thanks. I kind of expect them to sound slightly different
and indeed maybe slightly worse, but was after the better fitting (and
extra isolation?) .. in fact seeing that isolation works better
without moulds changes things somewhat. A couple more questions: I
take it you had an existing set of phones fitted into the moulds? If
so, could you tell me where you had them done? I'd be tempted in such
a case to just get a set and if I found that keeping them snug in my
ears became a problem I could get moulds made in the future. Secondly,
do your moulds snap around the phones or are they fixed and immovable?
If the latter, is/was it a simple job to replace filters?

Thanks again,

Jez

Back when I worked for Shure I had "earmolds" (moulds in American) made to
fit their E1's and E5's. Having someone (audiologist) push a tiny disc with
a string hanging off it into your ear past the second bend made me
apprehensive. The goo for the positive gives you a very weird sensation. I
went conservative so I didn't get my earmolds quite deep enough for a really
secure fit. They never gave me quite the same isolation as the foam, but
they were more comfortable. If my ears sweat, the fit changes on the
earmolds.

If you do get earmolds for the ER-4 (which sound stunning) I recommend also
getting a set of ER-15's. They are far more natural than other physical
plugs for use in high SPL environments. Our ears are incredibly precious and
precise instruments which require care and protection.

I can't remember who did my molds. There was a guy set up taking impressions
at an AES convention a few years back and I had the molds made and received
them in the mail a couple of weeks later. The ER4 just slide into them and
are easily removable.

I had ear molds made at an AES a while back as well. The company was
E.A.R.,Inc
http://www.earinc.com I was lucky enough to get a great fit and find
the comfort of the molded ear pieces can't be beat. I suggest finding
an audiologist with experience making immpressions. I agree with Jon
about the earplugs. The ER filtered ear plugs are one of the best
investments that I've made for my ears. I have the -15 and -25 caps.
Get them made at the same time as your ER-4s.

I've got a pair of the Earinc Instamold plugs that I use when I'm
shooting trap. Superb noise supression from a 12ga shotgun.

I had never even heard of these puppies before - I had a look at the
etymotic site, they look interesting.

What are you guys out there using them for? Maybe I should give them a
go...

They are great for personal listening of portable CD players, but I have
used them for mixing concerts, racing events, scenes with gun fire, etc.

Since I have no familiarity with these can anybody do a comparison to
ie the Shure E-1's, E-3's or E-5's which I am familiar with??

Just a quick thank you (as usual) to everyone for your info and
advice. I'll be contacting earinc and looking to get a set of ER15s
made if I do get moulds fitted. As an aside, Canford sent me a list of
audiologists by city in the UK. If anyone else was looking into
getting moulds fitted over here, the info sheet is number 02-166,
available by email from technical support at canford.co.uk.
