....and I don't know it.
But I recently, finally saw "October." Didn't like it as well as
"Strike," which I also saw recently.
Anyway....
The version of "October" I saw was driving me NUTS with all its
exasperating, inserted sound effects. This just totally drained out the
abstract magic of the silent medium for me. Every time soldiers
appeared, the soundtrack would add a banal crunch-crunch-crunch of boots
trudging on gravel. Metal clanking, knives being unsheathed, guns being
cocked, wooden boxes being piled, lots of ambient crowd murmurs...I just
*hated* all these embellishments. I'm fine with hearing train whistles
here and there (at least a whistle has musical qualities), but this
treatment was way over the top. It was doubly shameful, because the
noises only served to obscure the marvelous Shostakovich soundtrack.
