I am wondering if it is feasible to sync a 552 and a 744T.
On one level, this would just require syncing one unit, probably the 744T,
to the 552
On another level, which seems unlikely, synchronous recording.

You can send timecode out of the 744T to the 552, so you would have no
problem lining up takes from both machines in post production. The 552
has neither timecode output nor auto-record so there wouldn't be any
method for getting them to roll together at this time.

Thanks. Timecode sync is one aspect. However, to avoid the need for clock
chasing, I'd want to slave one clock to the other. Is there a solution?

It is possible to achieve 6 tracks in this setup, but it requires a
little trick. You'll need to have your AES come in to the 744T via one
of the two BNC digital inputs. So you would need an XLR female to BNC
cable to go from one of the 552's main outputs into the 744T. From
there, you need to set the 744T's input sources to analog manually
with menu options "Input 1,2: Source" or "Input 3,4:
Source" (Depending on which BNC input you used). In this
configuration, the 744T will lock its sample rate to the digital
signal coming in on the BNC connector but still derive input signal
from the 4 analog inputs.

Detail. How many channels are handled by the 552?
Let's say I want 6 channels total. I run one AES output of 552 to the
744T.
Then I have?
2 analog in 744T
2 digital in to 744T, that makes four.
2 channels to the flash on 552.
Total, 6. Is this correct?

When you consider that a 788T + CL8 is not going to be so much more
expensive then a 552 and 744T, i would suggest getting it and be done
with it.

The 788t meters are a bit weak for a recorder of this caliber
but the ability to customize the scale is an interesting workaround
and has proved useful on occasion.

You're right, but I have a setup I use to record music: Two slaved 744T .
Sometimes I need 10 channels. This is a way to get there with internal
batteries only.
