"The Wind & The Lion," followed by "The Parent Trap." Now there's a
compatible double feature. ;)

I don't see anything on that list which makes me excited, except
possibly "Room at the Top." Can't recall for sure whether I've seen that
or not. I probably have.

"Address Unknown" is one that they haven't shown before.

It seems like the formerly fairly modest number of silent features
once available on TCM is being reduced toward nothingness. Sigh...

The whole problem is that silent pictures only appeal to a small niche
market and when it is all said and done broadcasters have to put on
product that the vast majority of viewers will be prepared to watch.
(It's a pity that this vast majority is composed of chimpanzees and
people of an IQ less than 20).

(TCM in Australia broadcasts an average of 5 or 6 silent pictures in a
whole year)

TCM is being reduced toward nothingness.

I don't know how that's true, unless you're talking about brand new,
never before seen films.
Everything doesn't show up only on Sunday night. In October, there
were ten, and most were important films. Did you watch "The White
Sister" which aired for the second time this month? That had an
unbelievable score.
In November there are seven, including Griffith's "Battle of the
Sexes," Vidor's "The Patsy," "Piccadilly," plus Fred Niblo's "The Red
Lilly." Nothing new here for me, but that's TCM's problem.
Imagine? "The Red Lilly" and "Ben Hur" both being made so close
together with the same director and leading man. There's a reason
behind this.
According to Kevin Brownlow's "The Parade's Gone By...", Niblo was
sailing to France to finish up "The Red Lilly" when they approached him
about taking over the direction of "Ben Hur" (because of all the
production problems).
When Niblo came on board to do "Ben Hur," Ramon Novarro replaced
George Walsh as Judah Ben Hur. That's showbiz. It was the third pairing
in a row of actor and director.

Don't forget that February (and the first few days of March) are
traditionally TCM's "31 Days of Oscar" programming, and the Academy
Awards didn't overlap the silent era by very much.

Every year we oldtimers have to remind people not to panic about the
dearth of silent programming during that month.

I'm well aware that TCM is in the throes of Oscar celebration, and I
do acknowledge that they're just about the only quality game in cable
town, but I do wish they could put "Ben Hur" "Sargeant York" "Yankee
Doodle Dandy" and few other of their over-viewed chestnuts into the
storage locker for more than a few months and give even some dead of
night hours to a bit more explorative fare, notably some of the rarely
seen silents or the part talkies of the late 20's.

Gone are the days when TCM would show pre-code movies at 6:00 AM,
TCM's practice in the 90s. TCM did have some pre-code line-up for
last Thursday, its last showings of its Depression era movie series.
Still The Match King is not out on DVD, probably in part because of
snow problems in the movie prologue.
