Oh crap, it has a feature that lets you" "focus" the mics on the sound
source".
Thats it, I am getting out of the biz while I can still get something
for all my useless gear.
I suggest everyone do the same... (I may hang just a bit as a favor to
my clients)
lol

That may be the first ever, and perhaps the last, single system sound camera
where the company paid more attention to the "sound" part that the "picture"
part. Good-o!

Nah....there have been many other cameras that pay more attention to sound,
most notably the RED One which is.... oh wait, nevermind, my mistake.

Wonder if they are going to need a focus puller for that. Boom operators
could get retraining for that craft.

Did any of you see Wired's "review" of the Q3:

http://www.wired.com/reviews/product/pr_samson_zoom_q3

A key quote:

Quote:
It's the first of its kind with serious audio cred:
Maker Samson specializes in music-recording gear.

I'm getting three of these. Two I'll tape together so I can shoot 3D...the
third I'll keep running in my pocket so I'll have enough total tracks to
record 5.1 on location.

This is going to be great. I better get to work on the acceptance speeches
for all those Oscars I'm going to win.

I lIke it. Whenever someone tells me I can send sound to their camera
which also has audio, I'll say they can just use my recorder, which
also has HD!

Yeah, you'll have an "audio" that also has a camera! Cool.

If it had a way to make a decent picture, I might be tempted.

640x480 compressed in real time to an MP4 (MOV) file doesn't really
float my boat, especially as there's no zoom lens on the video.

<Shrug> I'll keep to my present system, I think.

Over on rec.video.desktop, the Flip Ultra HD has been
identified as a "sleeper". With remarkably nice HD video
and best-of-class audio performance. It records two hours
into its internal flash memory, runs on two AA cells (or a
supplied rechargeable battery), 2x zoom and a remarkably
good audio performance considering that the audio section
is a pair of tiny electret mics on either side of the lens.

It is actually good enough to use for "insert" cameras. I'm
thinking of getting another one or two just for that purpose.
Frame them for a reverse-angle on the conductor, or on the
keyboard, or the soloist, etc. and let them rip for 2 hours.
The audio would be only a guide track of course so it
could be dropped into the NLE timeline in the right place.

$180 at Costco, pretty good deal. Seems likely that there
are plenty of examples of video (and sound) on YouTube,
et.al. And several examples (and vendors) for 3rd party
add-on wide and talephoto lenses, etc.

That would be "telephoto". I don't want to even know what
"talephoto" means. Smile

I'm not particularly knocking the Q3, it's just that it's apparently no

better than the H2 as far as sound quality goes, with less versatility,
and it's no better on picture quality than the little video camera I
carry in my pocket all the time, which has the advantage of taking quite
nice still pictures too, although calling the audio on that one a usable
guide track is being generous. I just don't see the point *for me* in
spending money on something that doesn't make better pictures *and*
better sound than I can already capture with equipment that takes up
only marginally more space, time and effort.

I've no doubt that for some people, it's going to be a must-have item.
If there was an optical zoom facility on the video, I'd be willing to
pay a bit more than they're charging and buy one.

The Flip is available in the UK for under GBP 150, and I may consider
one if the need comes up. The Q3 is about GBP 200, or about GBP 30 more
than an H2.

Just my thoughts, for the tuppence ha'penny they're probably worth.
