These films were supposed to have been part of the cinerama / 70mm
festival that was to have been included in a 3 week season last
october.Better late than never but what about the other films planned
for last October's festival? |

I attended the screenings at the Dome, and I pretty much agree with
Matt's remarks. I had a few additional comments, since most of what
is known about THE GOLDEN HEAD came from an infamous red book. It may
not be much of a surprise to find a few added errors in the book:
There is no 3-strip Cinerama footage in THE GOLDEN HEAD. And thus,
there is no cameo of Otto Preminger. At least I didn't notice any 3-
strip shots, nor did any of the others I spoke with.
There WAS a surprising technical item in the opening credits,
however: Although the film was mostly shot in Technirama, there is a
credit for "Chase scene filmed in MCS 70". And indeed, towards the
end of the film, there are some shots going down a road that appear to
have a wider field of view than most of the rest of the movie. I
suspect that the helicopter shots may have also used the German MCS 70
camera, but it would be hard to tell for sure.
It is also worth noting that, although the red book talks about the 3-
strip release of HOLIDAY IN SPAIN, the print we saw was a 70mm print
with the same title and with the Cinerama logo at the beginning.
Thus, it is possible that there were 70mm showings as well as 3-strip
Cinerama showings in the 1960's after the single-lens projection
technique became available. The program book for SCENT OF MYSTERY
lists some scents for which there are no suitable matching scenes in
HOLIDAY IN SPAIN, so the movie may have had a shorter running time
when the scents were eliminated. I did not note the running time, so
I can't be sure.
As for some non-tech remarks: THE GOLDEN HEAD was a pretty standard
"kids outwit the thieves since the police won't" type of movie, and in
my opinion would be rated about two stars. The only uncomfortable
part is where Jess Conrad sings a song, which seemed very out of
place. I would also rate HOLIDAY IN SPAIN two stars, with the main
problem for me being listening to all of the thoughts of the Denholm
Elliott character, which is even more annoying than the chatter in the
original version of BLADE RUNNER.

Quote: This was followed by an actual
title card reading "Holiday in Spain." Here is a non-color-corrected
shot, and note that there is no pink on that title card!
I saw the initial exhibition of *The Scent of Mystery*, and except for
the presence of Mike Todd Jr and the former Mrs Mike Todd Sr, it was a
totally forgettable film.
