I had real trouble with this Coen Brothers movie. George Clooney and
Brat Pitt seemed to be playing against type, but it was a one
dimensional type they were playing. Similarly, Tilda Swinton played a
very unpleasant character. Even when a Coen brothers movie has great
characters, like in the Big Lebowski, I find their comedy a bit flat
(the exception being O Brother Where Art Thou.) Burn After Reading
seemed completely flat, until the ending which featured some brilliant
dialogue with the CIA chief, played by J.K. Simmons, whom I last saw as
Juno's father.
Malkovich was in character for the movie, but he often plays unpleasant
characters. The saving grace was, I suppose, Frances McDormand, who was
charming as usual. Still, Burn After Reading sure ain't Fargo. |
