"The Wake of the Red Witch" (US - 1948) Directed by Edward Ludwig,
script by Harry Brown and Kenneth Garnet from the Garland Roark
bestseller. John Wayne, Gail Russel, Gig Young and Luther Adler star is
this pale adaptation of the original novel. What gets up on the screen
is good (if not great), but there is about two more hours of material
that is just bypassed. The Roark novel is incredibly rich in plot and
atmosphere and calls out for a quality mini-series for justice.
Could you make "The Wake of the Red Witch" today? Yes but it would cost
hundreds of times more that the 1.2 million originally budgeted for this
film. This firm cries for an intelligent remake.

Is this the one about pearls and an old man who's powerful in his
little pond (island) vs John Wayne?

Could the modern film industry reliance on green-screening get around
some of that production cost/

You got some of the plot bits - but the film is a whole lot more. Get

the book and read it - it's a great story.
