"The Caine Mutiny" - (US - 1954) Some lineage! - Produced by Stanley
Kramer, directed by Edward Dmtryk, screenplay by Stanley Roberts from
the Herman Wouk novel. The film version of the best-seller stars
Humphrey Bogart, Jose Ferrer, Van Johnson, Fred MacMurray; a very young
Lee Marvin and a very young Claude Akins plus most of the great A-list
Hollywood extras. And a Max Steiner score. You can't get better than that.
We all know the story - and the U.S. Navy still says there never was a
mutiny on a USN ship.
Ferrer is very good as Greenwald, Bogart is great as Queeg, and Van
Johnson perfect as the dim-witted Maryk. Tom Tully ties it all together.
Good stuff for painless viewing.

And yet, the movie totally fluffs a major point Herman Wouk was
making: That Queeg was neurotic, not psychotic, and that his summary
relief was totally unjustified. |

This point is made in both the movie and the book. In fact, it is
hammered home in the movie at the post-trial cocktail party.
Greenwald made the point at trial that Queeg was paranoid.
"Paranoia is often associated with psychotic illnesses, sometimes
schizophrenia, although attenuated features may be present in other
primarily non-psychotic diagnoses, such as paranoid personality
disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder."
No.
At the trial, Greenwald made the point that Queeg had a paranoid
*personality*. A paranoid personality is NOT the same thing as paranoid
schizophrenia; it's not necessarily even a disabling illness, as the
court-appointed psychiatrist pointed out. Greenwald knew that, but
cynically counted on the judges' ignorance of the science to discredit
Queeg. He admitted as much, in the cocktail party afterward. A line
like "So I had to torpedo Queeg for you. It was easy, like shooting
fish in a barrel."
