(mild spoilers below)
Ever since 'Frequency', Gregory Hoblit's movies have
been must-sees, including those that came before.
He has spent a large part of his career directing TV,
so his movies have been few:
1) Primal Fear (1996)
2) Fallen (1998)
3) Frequency (2000)
4) Hart's War (2002)
5) Fracture (2007)
6) Untraceable (2008)
This one continues his high level of quality, though
my favorites are the odd-numbered ones.
One thing I like about this movie is that it avoids
plot-twisting revelations about who the bad guy is.
We learn who the killer is about half way through.
The mystery is why he is doing his killing on the
internet, and how his non-random victims are chosen.
The answers are unraveled and revealed in a logical
and satisfying way. The movie is both mystery and
thriller, and suspenseful action becomes paramount
as the end approaches.
The movie has more social relevance than Hoblit's
previous movies, as it leads us to acknowledge
our culture's rubber-necking fascination with cruelty
and death, and the dark side of the freedom of the
internet.
Though Hoblit is not an auteur, creating movies of
his choosing, he is a director whom quality projects
and people seek out, and this movie shows that
practice continuing. |
