Where was the Paramount lot located in 1930, when Lubitsch made his
early musicals for the studio?

Same place as it is now. Only smaller. The west half of the lot was
the RKO lot back then.

Nah. I heard God dries your car with a blast of his nostrils.

He expects a hefty tip, though.

Ah! For some reason I assumed that Paramount had bought and taken over
the RKO lot at some point and moved its operations there from somewhere
else. Didn't realize that they had existed side by side for a time.

Thanks!

Coincidentally, I'm in the process of uploading photos of the Paramount and
RKO lots that I took while in Hollywood several weeks ago.

Interestingly, the RKO building is still there, topped with a globe that
resembles the one in their logo. The size of the Paramount lot is just
staggering.

Was the RKO Gower lot originally FBO studios in the late 1920s?

Then RKO also owned the former Ince studios in Culver City and was
called RKO-Pathe. When Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz bought the RKO
studio in Hollywood, they also got the Culver City studio and what was
an independent studio (now called Ren-Mar) on Cahuenga Blvd. in
Hollywood.

When they owned the properties, it was called Desilu Gower, Desilu
Cahuenga and Desilu Culver studios. The Culver City lot had the back
lot where they had the street sets for Andy Griffith, Untouchables and
the POW camp for Hogan's Heroes.

Of all the studio lots, I think 20th Century Fox in West LA was the
largest. Now I am speaking of when it had that vast acreage before
selling everything off in the 1960s.

That does not even count their Hollywood studio lot(s) at Western &
Sunset. Or their ranch in Malibu canyon, which is now a CA state
park.

MGM had 5 or 7 lots in Culver City, plus their ranch in 1000 Oaks
area.

RKO had a ranch in what is now Reseda in the San Fernando Valley, and
Warners had theirs near what is now Westlake Village area.

Columbia's ranch is now part of Warner Bros. and still is in operation
in Burbank on Hollywood Way.

The only studio to still hold a ranch facility is Disney with their
Golden Oaks Ranch near Santa Clarita.

And old Charles Ray's studio, later to be Monogram and Allied Artists,
is now the studio for LA's PBS station, KCET.

Just a fraction of the Warner and Universal lots, methinks. I've had to
walk all of them, and on a hot day I'll take Paramount in a heartbeat.

I like the fact that when parking gets crowded at Paramount, the "overflow"
goes into the huge tank where the Red Sea parted and Ray Milland and John
Wayne fought over salvage ships.

The El Cid nightclub? Is that where Charlton Heston used to go to have
a shot?

In short, there's lots of haunted real estate in the Los Angeles area.

Someone told me that some of the old buildings around what is now the El
Cid nightclub, near where the "Intolerance" sets used to stand, were
used as production offices for that film.

Any info on this?

Wow! I've lived in the Thousand Oaks area nearly all my life. Where
was the MGM ranch located? Also curious about the address to the
Westlake Ranch.

Thanks,

Ron
